HOW TO BE A PROCESS SERVER in LAS VEGAS

in #stories7 years ago

You will recall: After listening to my mentor, I filed Bankruptcy having put in my 3 years of tax returns as the qualifier. And during that 3 year period, I never lost an opportunity to brush up on my law studies.

Well, I found myself able to prolong and sustain the utilities at our apartment and even apartment rent by using “LOOP-HOLE” tactics. The company operating the apartment complex soon viewed me as a formidable opponent and hired an attorney to get rid of me as a tenant. The Bankruptcy filing protected me and the opposing attorney attacked me through Bankruptcy court.

At the hearing, I prevailed due to “service of due process” technicalities (LOOP-HOLES).  The judge also warned me that I might not be so lucky next time.

After the hearing, the opposing attorney approached me with an offer: he wanted me to work for him and he was willing to drop the Apartment client so there wouldn’t be any conflict of interest. I accepted his offer as long as I was allowed to carry on my ticket broker business (which was very small by that time) using his office phone. He agreed and I went to work for his firm as a debt collector.

I earned 10.00 per hour doing this, having no fear of the IRS taking my paycheck “post-Bankruptcy”.  I also further supplemented my income by delivering pizza and Chinese food in the evenings. At first, I carried a radio and waited to be dispatched to a given restaurant. It only took 6 months before I started my own business delivering food. My business was growing rapidly.

Soon, I out grew the Law Office and the 10.00 per hour as opposed to the 1,000.00 per week I was making delivering food. I had five drivers and I dispatched all the location/destination/price information to the driver’s phone using text messaging on a beta test platform, using a 486 Think pad laptop and a phone line. The drivers all used cell phones. So, I tendered my resignation, to which the Attorney asked: “So you deliver food; have you ever tried delivering “papers””? “No, I never even considered it,” I said.

He left the office and came back with what he called his “worst case scenarios” or his “cases that need to be served NOW!” He gave me a 15 minute primer on how to serve and who could and couldn’t be served and under what circumstances.  He handed me 60 packets which we called “SERVES” in the business.  “See what you can do with those and get back to me. Depending on how you do will dictate the amount I’ll pay you to deliver papers.”

I served all 60 packets in 2 days. I came back to the Law Office and developed a procedure for turning over “Scene Information” and “Affidavit(s) of Service”. I was to be paid every Friday and I structured the days I paid my five “independent contractors” accordingly.  We divided the County and the Cities into sections: North Vegas, South Vegas, East Vegas, West Vegas and Henderson/Boulder City.  I personally took Henderson/Boulder City and all long distance, out of state and county serves.

The very first serve was on a developer who was particularly hard to serve. There had been 10 attempts by a reputable seasoned process service company. It just so happened that I tracked him down to one of his projects where everyone knew he would be at a certain time (11:00) am. There was going to be a surprise Birthday party and no one suspected that I wasn’t part of the group that was catering it.

He thought he was getting a “gag” gift when he opened the envelope. Needless to say, I was literally physically chased from the party and considered a Traitor and a Judas. The Attorney firm was ECSTATIC when I phoned that one in.

The next 5 all were addressed to different vacant properties. I was able to obtain such information that indicated that they were all occupied from the various neighbors and even what time they usually came home or emerged from their dwelling. I was there and got every one of them.

I served twenty business by serving the owners or the resident agents and even served them at their homes by serving their 14 year old kids or visiting kids. In full accordance with the Nevada Revised Statutes, of course. And in the end, we negotiated a $65.00 per service “fee” to myself and my contractors, who got 25.00 per serve from me.

I discovered many many “things”, i.e.: techniques, loop-holes, traps, tactical service, acting, controlling the scene, and on and on. I was accosted many times by the different police departments depending on what part of the city I was in. (I learned a loop-hole when it comes to police also, and I was made privy to their training and the use of “procedural psychology”.) I went on to serve papers for the next five years before ANARCHY took over and I could no longer in good conscience sign a “penalty of Perjury” oath and remain true to myself.

I have some pretty good anecdotal based stories to relate to MY FELLOW STEEMIANS about serving papers including one that involved SWAT smoking me out of my van just to have me “force” them to allow me to serve the person that called SWAT in the first place.  I’ll tell those stories as COMMENTS when enough people ask me to!

Luckily we have a window close to the door 🚪, I don't think I have done anything bad, but sometimes I think what if I am being served. Great story! Hopefully your Financial situation is back on track. I would like to see a bankruptcy court try and take your bitcoin or Steemit money.

Up voted and resteemed! Thanks for your support!

Trust me when I tell you . . .There are plenty of financial stories to tell and I am getting right as we speak! Up-Voted

Thanks @briandenver. Yes, that was years ago! Thank you for the up vote and the re-steem.

This is an interesting personal story, can't wait to hear more details~

I had great Ford Surveillance Van equipped with blackout drapes, motion detection, 2 extra marine batteries, toilet, fridge, cameras and monitoring system. Of course I had headphones and a super quiet battery powered ventilation system of quiet fans.

On this particular night, I arrived at the home in a quiet residential neighborhood. I backed into the driveway around 2:30 AM and turned on the motion detector alarm, turned on the motion sensor driven camera, closed the blackouts and laid down for a snooze, knowing that some irate homeowner would soon be questioning my choice of parking space.

I was dreaming and it was the old television show "SWAT" with the police jumping out and drawing down on someone until I began to open my eyes and realized the police were outside my vehicle calling me out! At this point, I had lots of experience with the police including being privy to some of their training and protocol.

I heard: "Get out of the vehicle with your hands up NOW NOW NOW . . . . .!" I emerged from the sliding van door, backwards with my hands up! There were 12 squads and about 6 cops drawing down on me. I was thrown to the ground, face down, cuffed and then stood up, dry grass and dust all over my front and my face and mouth.

"Who are you sir and what are you doing here?" asked one of the officers. "I, I, I," I stammered. One of the officers comes over to me and says, "let me deal with him; I'll make him talk!" I said, "I, I' I'm . . I'm." "You're WHAT!!?", yells the officer. "Well, I'm, I'm . ." "Spit it ouuuttttt!!!!" yells another officer. "What are you doing here in this lady's driveway!!", pointing to an older woman who appeared frightened, obviously someone living in the home. "Well", I said, in a non stammering voice and a belligerent tone, "I'm SERVING PAPERS".

Where you Serving papers to a member of the SWAT team? As a mother of two kids I hate it when a van parks on our street!

No to the home owner

Lol! No, I served papers on the woman who lived at the house, but the police facilitated the service otherwise I would have served her by serving them!

No, I was DREAMING of a Swat episode when I awoke to discover the REAL Police were ordering me out of the van, lol!

Awesome information, thanks for sharing : )

That attorney was good for giving you jobs. Also good to know that your business was a success. :)

Thank you @zararina. I've been pretty successful at most projects and jobs here in Vegas.
