$FB vs $TWTR (Facebook vs Twitter)
hi2all,
I'm new to steemit, but I'm not new to social media. Maybe I'm to old as it all started long time ago in digital Zion (World of Warcraft) as first mass online interaction environment. Then it was Myspace, then I moved to more real life connected people on Facebook, then started using Twitter as a way to escape from every day reality. Than I deactivated Facebook as the real life connections were a little to judgmental on my posts about markets and currency moves usually in the form of a song with either up (buy) or down (sell) lyrics.
Guess I'm a bit fucked up in the head or people around me had no sense about music and market moves. I changed a little and I'm not so hyped on currency trade and all the buy, buy... sell, sell game, but to get a slight idea about it, the old me would just posted yesterday $FB with "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg ft. Pharrell & today maybe $TWTR with "Killa" by Cherish ft Yung Joc. (short means to sell something you don't actually have in order to extract profit from falling prices (for the totally clueless people to financial slang)).
So like you've might've figured out by reading so far, this post is going to be on social media stocks & my un-certified financial adviser/analyst (unCFA) view on Facebook (FB) & Twitter (TWTR). Bought companies seem quite similar. People not interested in social media/networks think there is no F difference between them except maybe that Facebook is more popular world wide & having more users & Twitter been more US market focused. In the last 2 days bought companies stocks even felt in quite similar way around 20%.. So why I'm wasting your time to read?
Well there are some important differences:
Stream:
$FB content is ordered by default by some algorithm, Facebook kinda impact your relation with the people you know on their media. Their algo decides what to show you & what to remain at the bottom of the screen at the very low end of the screen, down to the part you'll never scroll down to.
$TWTR content is order by default by time of posting. No algorithm impacts your view, no interference with what you are supposed to see and not to.Posting:
$FB one can edit all elements of posting editing the content, editing the time stamp. It's very convenient for people trying to scam other people, what they said and when. Normally it's not of that great importance, but on trading/investing topics it can make all the difference. Imagine the value difference of listening to someone's advice to buy Bitcoins when 10k BTC would've got you 2 Pizzas & someone pretending he/she gave that great advice in 2010.
$TWTR well if you like to editing it's totally F up for you... totally, can't change a F thing. You post something then all you can do is delete and re-post after realizing you made a typo. If you like posting your cat with the perfect catchy text it can ruin your day completely, I totally agree on that. However content is much more like in real life and normal conversation. Can't curse at someone then change it that you really like him/her. Will have to apologize or something. But this problem for some is actually a great thing. No one can pretend he/she told you to go short on social media companies this Wednesday, just before the 20+% drop or even worse for someone that told you to buy just before the earnings to edit it to sell.3rd Party advertisement & overall monetisation of the platforms:
$FB a load of ads, like really a lot... I doubt there is any room left for more ads to increase ads revenue any further, by Facebook platform on it's own. Instagram & what's app have bigger monetisation potential as they are not so overloaded by content you actually don't want to see.
$TWTR not a lot of ads, actually if you are shareholder it's a bit stressing that the platform actually lacks banners with useless stuff you don't actually want to see as a normal person. Ads are shown as promoted tweets. It's like Twitter uses about 15% of their Ads revenue potential in the sense of old school online marketing...Who views your great post and important views on the world:
$FB mainly people that know you in real life, most likely you might end up explaining your self next day on work what the F you posted last night drunk...
$TWTR mainly people that have interest on the same topic you posted, quite easy if you are not running for President or wanting to build some public image to drink & post under some name, that will not get you fired, not hired or at least explaining your self for that moment of your life you felt a bit more creative & deciding to share something with the world. Can use it as shoutbox no problem, someone out there might actually understand you and feel the same way... (hope it's kinda the same here on steemit, but I guess I'll notice in time)Main steam media & Political importance
$FB gossip level, due to stream ordering algorithm it's possible to see a 2-3 days old news over & over again, kind of creating a mental lag and making you think on the topics that Facebook algorithm think are important for you.
$TWTR What is actually happening in the world. Used by almost every main steam media (saying almost every as I don't actually have a complete list of all media agencies in the world to double check). Because stream is being ordered by time in order for you to see the same thing for 3 days there must be some really big interest on that piece of info and a lot of new publications on the topic or at least a media that wants to spam you about it... The president of US - Trump quite a controversial persona (to put in some diplomatic/politically correct aspect) has a personal account, not filtered by a team of PRs (might be a PR trick, but if so, it's F very convincing tweets with only capital letters... who older than 10 years writes that way). Ok think you got the picture on that criteria...Active users drop leading to the heavy price drop of the stock:
*** Not having any inside company info, just guessing***
$FB people like me, that got pissed of at the platform or bored with it. Real people, not bots or fake (fans/page likers accounts)... really bad news in my opinion...
$TWTR there was an announced purge of fake followers accounts & bots I think. Think it was quite a good move despite my 10$ investment loss to buy a 1000 followers like more than an year ago... Despite that "huge" :) loss I'm quite happy as to my surprise the fake followers I lost in a day were less than 50%, the other 500 fake must have been removed earlier a few at time...
However this move by management must have had quite some impact on the Active Users KPI, however in my opinion it's not the KPI number that is of greatest importance, the important thing IMHO is understanding what are the reasons for the change are.
Well that's about all I know, about the 2 platforms. I'm not saying it's a great moment to buy or sell any of the 2 companies stocks. Currently I neither own any shares, neither have short positions in neither $FB, neither $TWTR. What I'm saying is that is very probable to move $TWTR to the top of my watch list as I believe the company has better potential in the long, long run due to in my personal opinion aiming for higher quality and managing to keep it's users better.
