RE: The hissing power transmission lines – What makes the sound!
Well written sir!
Corona effect is also observed around spark plugs. Although there's no hissing sound here. Probably due to the much loud sound of the engine.
If you have held a spark plug and check around it. You will find a rusty coloration around ceramic insulation close to the bolt of the spark plug. It's due to leakage of high voltage which ionizes air in close vicinity.
Spark ignition voltages are also in the same order as those of power transmission lines.
You are very correct. There are many other places corona can be found. The crt television also operates on very high voltage in other of thousands of kilovolts, and corona occurs.
Another interesting thing is it has applications, like in photocopy machine.
Maybe that will be a discussion for another day!
You should write an article on it.
