The world we live in and The Technology we rely upon..

in #steemstem6 years ago

No doubt, we all live in the technological age where total reliance is on the social media, our privacy is stored on it with absolute total control by the developer of these applications, without any monitoring either by the government agency or any government-sponsored agency, which primarily deals with domestic policy issues.

People post their entire lives on social media sites, their most intimate details, out there for the world to see. It invites the attention of trolls, pedophiles and critics, as well as the admiration of friends.

People judge their self-worth, not on their achievements or actions, but on, how many followers they have or the number of likes on a selfie. Sorry to those with many followers on steemit. A quick fix high, with no depth or intrinsic value. We are losing our identity in an age of information technology.

Smooth transactions, communications, learning and research have been so easy with social media, but as we know there is no technology with advantage and leaves no disadvantage, many times the benefits and advantages of social media are emphasized quite often opposed to its negative impacts in our life which are very rarely discussed.

Okay; let's peep into the current data breach by Facebook.

How did it start

No one can actually point to the first data breach of trust since Zuckerberg is the only one that seems to have total access to the data, but the notably first breach can be traced to 2014.

let's watch this

Hmm, no wonder Mark Zuckerberg, $71 billion was ranked as the fifth richest in the world
Forbes' 2018 top 15 billionaires

To those that are still wondering about how this guy makes his money through his app, you can get the clue from the video above, well that is not the point.

Let's look at how Hearings Show Congress failed to understand how Technology works let alone regulating it

Having spent my time to watch Zuckerberg facing the committees from the Senate. Zuckerberg's testimony in front of committees looked nothing new to me.

Of course, many of the illustrious senators and representatives assembled devoted their limited minutes asking the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the United States to address some very simple issues, like how Facebook works and the relationship between WhatsApp and Facebook

“Yesterday when we talked, I gave the relatively harmless example that I’m communicating with my friends on Facebook and indicate that I love a certain kind of chocolate. And all of a sudden I start receiving advertisements for chocolate. What if I don’t want to receive those commercial advertisements?”
— Senator Nelson (D-FL)

This kind of question is simple and not proven to secure the privacy of our data but lucky for Zuckerberg to answer as he only needs to get most of his attention on moderating his face in such a natural and innocent way.

Let's watch it here

Conclussion

Of course, to get there, we need to look beyond how Congressmen and Congresswomen are approaching the issue and every individual should try as much as possible to protect and guide his/her total reliance on the social media. That is if we don’t want to have another Cambridge Analytica on our hands or what do you think?

Your thoughts are important.

I totally agree with you. The reason why I'm not the type of person who shares my personal life in social media is because I dont want my life to be an open book. I value my privacy more than anything in this world. It's what we only have that money can never buy. So I really dont care if Im not following the crowd. All I care is my privacy and identity and nothing else matters.

Lol, that means you are playing safe @sakura1012. Nice to see you here.

I am? Well, being selfish would sometimes saves us. I will be hanging around your blog then. 😊

Well, the main problem, IMO, is that facebook collects data about people who are not even on facebook (through people who are on facebook). This is not acceptable...

Of course, it is not acceptable because it looks dubious, but, I don't think there is a way to stop him from doing that unless users control their privacy (what they post) important. Nice to see you here Prof.

Once can also block the social network buttons via a good ad-blocker. This helps when one is not on any social network (beyond steemit)

Well, the issue here is very tricky. First, we should control the amount of information we put out there because of the hypes.

But then, some information are required and thus, our privacy must be taken care of.

Thanks for bringing to us what the fuse is about. I didn't know the details this much before. Well-done.

It's my pleasure. Thanks for the nice comment @mrbreeziewrites.

You're welcomed

The issue of privacy when it comes to social media is a very tricky one. You put your stuff on the internet and set how it should appear but we dont know how it is being used. Such an irony!

Exactly @rharphelle, some guys out there will be taking the advantage in order to enrich themselves without giving its users token. Thanks to steemit for the opportunity so far.
