TECH THINGS
Hey friends,
This is keval back with new content, I generally keep on talking about cookies, browser history, etc so today i will talk about the same what is browser cookies?
THE blog will answer following question……
What are browser cookies?
How they work?
How to avoid them?
How to disable them?
So let’s get started…..
What are cookies?
Cookies the word is not the same as that of what we find foods it bit of different so let’s understand….
Cookies are small pieces of information stored in a browser by the website you visit, they are particularly few bits of data. Now this data can be anything for eg say it may be the name, address ,mail id, password, phone no, links etc it can be anything.
History of the word cookies
The cookies word was derived from the word “magic cookie” which is a packet of data a program receives and sends back unchanged
Why cookies are needed?
Any website you visit for the first time your browser will probably not have any cookies for the site, but as you go for next time there will be some cookies of it. Suppose you visit steemit.com web page on your browser for first time, the browser will initially take time to reach the site, also you need to login or create your account on the same and then just suppose that you also have changed certain settings such as steem tokens should be INR and not in dollar format, your background should be dark, your profile page should have a photo, your details about the post, etc settings and stuff should be there on your steemit account and then you leave the page. Now when you visit next time website, you are automatically logged in to your page, the settings are the same that you have kept it also it is in the same situation as it was left, so who does all this job, the server will hold your account and password and other details of the user but all the other details, settings were stored in your web browser cookies. This cookies had the each and every details of your webpage, the settings you had, everything website had stored into the cookies. So this cookies were basically invented to keep your settings and other stuff so that you just don’t need to waste your time filling the details that websites require again and again and thus can start from where u stopped…..
How this cookies work?
Now every browser has its own sets of cookies and every browser manages it by itself. The list of cookies your browser has can be easily viewed, also you can see that which website is storing what cookies in your browser. Now every website you visit the browser allows to access only those cookies that were stored by the websites in it during it’s past sessions and it cannot access any other websites cookies and thus steal data out of it, the browser will take care of that stuff.
Now when you visit into a website the browser will see that any of its cookies are there if yes then it will transmit it to the website . Then next thing will be that if you have multiple accounts of the same website then website will ask for the which account you want to go and then it will automatically login for you and then restore the settings for it etc stuff will be ready for you, this is how sites go with cookies and this is how it saves our energy and time for the same.
TYPES OF COOKIES
There are diferent types of cookies
Session cookies: session cookies are those which store your data only from the time you opened your browser to the time you will close it, after that it there is no existence of the cookies that were formed they are temporary to the browser.
Persistent cookies: persistent cookies are those that that site stores some data to it and it remains in it for a specific amount of time. They won’t perish out when you close your browser. This cookies have specific time and date of expiration associated to them. They are transmitted to the browser when you visit a website.
Secure cookies: This cookies are transmitted to the websites that are only https based i.e encrypted connection is between them and will not sent it to the http based thus it will keep us secure from cookies theft..
Then comes third party cookies, this are not any special type of cookies they are only made by site you are currently visiting. Suppose you visit a website that has a third party advertising, that web sites may use a cookie to track your web habits for marketing purpose.
This is great demerit of a cookies.
Good uses of cookies
Cookies store your login details and website preferences without which we won’t be able login directly and thus waste time. It also provides great personalization as website will see and thus provide you details or stuff that you would like and thus won’t annoy you.
Bad use of cookies
Bad use is that, many times cookies are used for more questionable purpose. Advertising companies keep tracking your cookies and thus they show you adds accordingly, by doing this that they are putting our privacy in great threat.
How to access/disable your cookies?

Cookies theft
Cookies can also be stolen by a technique called cross site scripting, here this can happen to a website that allows the user to post HTML OR java scripting content to there website.
Here attacker by himself will post some malicious content/links of java or HTML and when user will come there and click on that link, and thus it will bypass the browser and make it to give its all cookies to attacker site that he controls and thus steals up your data. This is called cross site scripting.
Okay that’s all from my side, i hope u like it, meet u’ll in next one.
