Quenepas Tree
in 1756 Patrick Browne, a doctor from Ireland with expertise in botany! described a tree he met in Puerto Rico, and became his "godfather", giving him the name "M bijugatus"!
This name (bijugatus) is due to the leaves of the plant. Its leaves have an elliptical shape and a length that does not exceed 12.5 cm in length and 5 cm in width.
Born in an area from Colombia to Guyana, Quenepas reached the West Indies at the beginning of the 19 th century. This majestic tree with broad straight trunk sometimes reaches 25 m high.
Its elliptical leaves are alternate but composed of 4 leaflets opposite two by two. Its whitish and fragrant flowers are grouped into terminal panicles. The fruit, round or slightly elongated, looks like a small lime. Its smooth, fine and leathery skin stays green when ripe but becomes shiny.
The pulp adheres more or less to a large nucleus. It is fine, gelatinous, juicy, translucent and salmon-pink in color. The genus 'Melicoccus' comes from 'meli' meaning honey in Greek and 'kokkos', seed. The children feast on its sweet pulp a little tart.
Its fruit, peeled and cooked in water gives a delicious juice to drink cold. The whole fruit, cooked for a long time in sugar, allows the preparation of a syrup served with rum. The kernel contains an almond to grill.
Quenepa fruit differs in flavor depending on the degree of ripening. So sometimes it is softer (when it is more mature) and sometimes it is more sour (when it is more green).
This fruit usually grows in clusters of twelve or more from a single stem. Similar in shape and size to a large green olive, the outer flesh is hard and brittle. It is easily peeled off to expose a pink flesh to cream, which gives it a very sweet taste. Also known as a Spanish lime, this fruit is often served in drinks such as lime, or served as a fresh flavored snack to eat straight away.
