Fiji hold off a late Barbarians comeback to win thriller

Fiji held off a late comeback from the Barbarians to claim an entertaining win at Twickenham.

Mathieu Bastareaud and Andre Esterhuizen crossed for the Baa-Baas in the first half, but converted tries from Enele Malele and Teti Tela saw Fiji lead at the break.

John Dyer's two second-half scores and Temo Mayanavanua's try kept Fiji ahead.

The Baa-Baas drew close through late efforts from Makazole Mapimpi and Morne Steyn, but Fiji clung on.

England coach Eddie Jones was in charge of the Barbarians, who featured former Ireland hooker Rory Best in his final game before retirement.

Three missed conversions from Barbarians fly-half Curwin Bosch proved crucial to the final result, as did two close try decisions that went against his side in the second half.

World Cup winner Tendai Mtawarira thought he had crossed in his final international appearance, but the the 34-year-old prop, nicknamed 'Beast', had his close-range effort disallowed after replays showed that he had dropped the ball when crossing the line.

Colin Kaepernick does not attend NFL private workout

Unsigned Colin Kaepernick chose not to attend an NFL-arranged private workout, instead holding his own session at a high school to allow media to attend.

He said he wanted "transparency", claiming the NFL denied media access to its own planned workout in Atlanta.

All 32 clubs were invited by the NFL to assess Kaepernick, who last played in 2016, when he began kneeling at the US national anthem in protest at racism.

The NFL said it was "disappointed" the venue changed at 30 minutes' notice.

Representatives from 25 clubs had turned up at the Atlanta Falcons' training facility expecting to see the 32-year-old.

"Kaepernick was a no-show for 25 NFL teams at Falcons facility waiting at 3pm," the league tweeted.

Addressing a media huddle when his workout finished at Charles R Drew High School, in Riverdale, Kaepernick said: "Our biggest thing was making sure we had transparency in what went on.

Myles Garrett: Cleveland Browns player 'suspended indefinitely' by NFL for helmet attack

Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett has been "suspended indefinitely" by the NFL after hitting Mason Rudolph with the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback's own helmet.

Garrett is suspended for at least the remainder of the season and will not be paid during the ban.

The 23-year-old will only be reinstated with the approval of NFL officials.

Garrett said his actions were "selfish and unacceptable", apologising to Rudolph in a statement on Friday.

"Last night, I made a terrible mistake," he added.

"I know that we are all responsible for our actions and I can only prove my true character through my actions going forward.

"I want to apologise to Mason Rudolph, my team-mates, our entire organisation, our fans and to the NFL."

Pittsburgh's Maurkice Pouncey, who was also ejected after a subsequent scuffle, has been banned for three games.

Cleveland's Larry Ogunjobi has been banned for one match for pushing over an opponent in the aftermath of the incident, while both teams have been fined $250,000 (£194,000),

Heineken Champions Cup: Bath 16-17 Ulster

Ulster held to win at Bath by a point in a closely fought opening pool three game in the Heineken Champions Cup.

John Cooney scored 12 points for the Pro14 side, touching down in the first half, as well as adding two conversions and a vital penalty which won the game.

Rob Lyttle also crossed for the visitors, while Gabriel Hamer-Webb hit back with a try on his European debut.

Freddie Burns, up against his brother Billy, kicked eight points with his boot, but it was not enough for Bath.

Bath looked set to clinch victory right at the death as they had an overlap but Ulster wing Jacob Stockdale produced a sensational interception to prevent Zach Mercer finding Semesa Rokoduguni with the pass.

Joe Root: Ashley Giles says England reclaiming Ashes in Australia is captain's 'holy grail'

England Test captain Joe Root has been backed to "lead and win in Australia" by director of men's cricket Ashley Giles as they try to reclaim the Ashes.

Australia left England with the urn for the first time since 2001 this summer, while the 28-year-old also presided over a 4-0 loss down under in 2017-18.

Root has said he and new coach Chris Silverwood are "aligned" on a two-year plan to win back the Ashes in 2020-21.

"That's the 'holy grail' for him," said Giles.

Speaking to the BBC's Test Match Special, Giles added: "Going to Australia and winning is the big prize, and we have enough time to plan for that.

"We have talked about him leading and winning in Australia. We've not said: 'Maybe if you get there.' We plan for him to be our captain.
