The "over priced" silver keeps on coming!! Thank you ROYAL MINT...
Yesterday saw the Royal Mint release the second in the series of the GRUFFALO coin.
The Gruffalo is a much loved children's book and is even a favourite of my little 1/2pint. So when I fist heard they would be releasing them, I knew, regardless of price, I had to get the "full set" for him.

Although the RM is less than 5 minutes from the house, the new coin was released at 9am on a Thursday. Being stuck in work, I ordered/reserved my coin online and am expecting delivery by the weekend:
With over 65% already reserved, it won't be long before they sell out. So if you're thinking of picking some up either let me know and I'll go get them personally OR order direct from the RM as P&P is free on orders over £45.
I'm glad that the RM kept the mintage figures at just 25000. The value of silver in these coins is worth a fraction of its actual cost, so I'm hoping that it's collectable value will increase over time.
The Gruffalo has been around for 20yrs and its popularity continues to grow, so I'm hoping that in another 20yrs time this little series will have gone up.
With a face value of just 50p (£0.50/$0.65USD) and weighing in at just 8g, the artist has done a great job bringing this coin "to life". In my opinion, I think it looks so much better than the first coin. The introduction of the mouse and a full shot of the Gruffalo really does make the coin POP!!
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? Have I bought another clanger than will I never make my money back on? Or will this be a great investment and something my kids will still enjoy long after I've gone?

My eldest loves the Gruffalo too. If all it does is inspire your boy to learn about coins and silver then it'll be worth the fat premium many times over.
He's also got the over priced Peter rabbit collection. Oh and the Paddington Bear collection. Oh yeah and the snowman collection.... What's wrong with me??

We talked about this already if I remember correctly the first Peter Rabbit is doing fantastic on the secondary market.
I got the Simpsons coins and I am pretty sure I will not make my money back on them except the donut but I think I will keep them and hang them on a wall soemday.

Yes, the first Peter rabbit!! I'm so happy I picked up a few of them when they first came out. I didn't buy any of the Simpson coins, but I do see the doughnut on ebay every now and then.
Like you, I'll probably just hold on to them and put mine in a glass display case. Once the sets are completed in sure they will make for a great talking point when friends come over.

It's one of 1/2pints favourites. I hope he appreciates them in the future.
I have a rather extensive collection of commemoratives and I never bought one when they were issued. That is because you can buy almost all, two or three years later, for less than you would have paid at the issue. I can't believe that this particular coin, with 25,000 copies and its release price, will be a Winner in a few years, but I might be wrong...

I agree with you, 25000 is far too high and its far too overpriced. If the Gruffalo is around for another 20yrs then they might make their money back!!
I think that the coin is beautiful and for that price, you know that it is intended for collectors. Colorized coins are super fantastic because it brings out the beauty of the artwork and the design is engraved on silver. For sure you will not have any difficulty showing the design, hahaha, unlike proof coins that you have to find the right angle to get a decent photo of the coin design because of the mirror finish, LOL!!! CONGRATULATIONS, @welshstacker. Looking forward to seeing that coin!

Once a Month we went down to the LCS, and they would let her comb through Silver rounds/bars!
I remember when we first started doing this, they looked at us funny when we wanted to choose our Silver!🤔
