Few creatures command the same primal fear and respect as the Saltwater Crocodile, and in 2014, the Perth Mint immortalized this apex predator in the form of a 1oz silver bullion coin. This was the first release in a planned new series from the Australian mint, but after just two designs—the Saltwater Crocodile and the 2015 Funnel-Web Spider—the series was discontinued in favor of the now-iconic Kangaroo silver bullion series. Despite its short run, the Saltwater Crocodile coin remains a highly sought-after piece, known for its stunning design, high silver purity, and low premiums.

The Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the largest living reptile in terms of body mass, an apex predator that has ruled its territory for millions of years. Found across northern Australia, Southeast Asia, and the east coast of India, these formidable creatures can grow over 21 feet (6.5 meters) long and weigh more than 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). Unlike most reptiles, "salties" are highly adaptable, thriving in saltwater, brackish water, and even freshwater environments, from rivers and lakes to swamps and coastal shores.

What makes them particularly fearsome is their sheer power and hunting strategy. Capable of explosive bursts of speed in the water, they ambush prey with a lightning-fast strike, using their bone-crushing jaws to seize and drown their victim before swallowing it whole. Their infamous "death roll"—a spinning maneuver used to tear apart large prey—cements their status as one of the most dangerous predators on Earth.

The reverse of the coin, designed by Natasha Muhl, captures the essence of this prehistoric beast. The Saltwater Crocodile is depicted with its mouth open, sharp teeth exposed, ready to attack. The fine detailing on the scaly skin, ridged back, and powerful jaws brings the design to life, making it a visually striking piece of bullion. Below the crocodile, the Perth Mint’s iconic ‘P’ mintmark is proudly displayed, ensuring its authenticity. Surrounding the image are the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN SALTWATER CROCODILE", along with its weight and purity: "1 OZ 9999 SILVER".

On the obverse, the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and the denomination of 1 Australian Dollar. This familiar portrait gives the coin its status as legal tender under Australian law.

The 2014 Saltwater Crocodile was struck in .9999 fine silver, making it an attractive option for investors and collectors alike. Unlike many limited mintage coins, it was initially offered with low premiums, making it an affordable way to stack high-purity silver while owning a piece with a unique and powerful design. The coin measures 40.6mm in diameter, slightly larger than many standard bullion coins, further enhancing its presence.

Despite its relatively high mintage, the fact that this series was discontinued after just two releases has increased its desirability among collectors. Many bullion stackers and numismatists see the Saltwater Crocodile as a standalone piece of Australian silver bullion history, marking the brief transition between Perth Mint’s wildlife-themed coins and the long-running Kangaroo series.
