Hold on to your Catalytic Converters, here come the hikes in Platinum and Palladium!
Another P-metals mine getting shut down because of regulators - Mimosa mine? Lonmin? Zimplats? - this time in South Africa.
"A shutdown at Mimosa would be a major blow to global platinum supply. With the mine having produced over 555,000 ounces of PGMs in 2016."
This equates to 75 percent of Zimbabwe’s platinum and palladium production.
Commentary: Will the free and fair economics markets play out and we will have another 2014' where thieves in America stole more than 4400(reported) converters, leaving brand new Mercedes cars driving down streets sounding like a monster truck event.
Ha... I remember back in the 90s someone cut off my converter abd stole it... first time I learned about platinum inside.
Yeah, it was huge business for the crooks in 2008 when I was still in the states. Some of the really expensive ones were re-sold by the very crooks that stole them back to the dealers for 1000's of dollars. Dealers didn't have a choice, either: buy back their stolen ones for $1000 or buy a new ones for $2500
I never keep them long enough to worry about spot of whats inside them. I think the scrap guys that buy them all cheat the prices anyways.
Yeah, they normally give you less than the spot platinum content even though they will probably resell it to another car/parts dealer for much more rather than scrapping it themselves.
Cat thefts are going to explode. It's bad enough now that you can't call a recycler to get one. Last time I needed one there was a sole cat converter in the entire goddamn province. They're worth 300+ up here and that's the absolute lowest.
Yep, last time I visited a dealer friend I have in the states he had a S500 and back then those cats were 1000 used each/ there are two of them.
