Royal Mint Lunar Coin Set
I have been trying to photograph my new Royal Mint lunar dog to try and show it in its best light, this has turned out to be a somewhat disappointing series of coins, with uninspired designs. When the first coin was released, the year of the horse i got lucky and bought one of the mule coins, the Royal Mint had accidentally got the queens face that was destined for the Britannia which had an edge pattern mixed up with the plain design supposed to be on the new lunars.
I admit my interest in this series does come down to having that 1 coin, the mule and i now intend to complete the set in a nice presentation box, had i not obtained the mule i would possibly have let this set slide into oblivion where my collection is concerned and i have no interest in any of the proof variations of this collection nor am i able to feign any interest in telling you all the mintages or the artist behind the designs, but as a lower cost bullion coin it will make a nice set when completed and i do hope there will be at least 1 killer design in the series at some point. I can tell the designer has tried to add something to the dog coin with a more detailed pattern rather than the more mirrored finish of the preceding releases but personally i dont think it works and a mirrored finish might have looked slightly better
Here we are, everybodys favorite side of a coin, old blue blood herself, but i just thought the detail on the face is quite smart, the 3d effect of the background is very striking and a very nice addition to the Royal Mint bullion coins, see im trying to be possitive lol.
A very cool box form meinmunzbox in Germany, they make some excellent displays for some of the more popular series such as koala, lunar, kookaburra, panda, elephant and the like.
The coin in the centre is the lunar horse mule that will make this a 13 coin set, i still havent made a hole for the coin to sit in yet but that is my intention when i pluck up the courage, or i might just leave it loose, i have about 7 years to decide.
Not sure if you can see on this picture the pattern arround the edge of the face which was not supposed to be on this coin, it does add some value and intrigue to an otherwiswe lacklustre set.
Solid write up. Gotta agree with with your assessment of the coin just overall being boring, I think the display case might be more interesting, haha
lol, yea the display case could very easily have an image of a Rwanda rooster stuck over it if the Royal Mint lunars dont watch out, the box is worth at least 2 of the coins inside it, maybe 3 haha. Was hard to write about the coins, i was falling asleep doing this post.
The Royal mint hates silver bullion, they must to be able to make this series worse. I have bought a few of these every year from release and i was really looking forward to the dog.
Here, that box you have. Do they sell brit box's as well?
Great post BTW

Exactly like that one. I have seen them this name on eBay before from Germany, i never knew they were a website, lol. Just seen they sell caps as well.
Thanks buddy
