Today we will start a small series called Lost Ships in Canadian Waters.
They are $20 CAD coins with 99.99% pure silver, a metal weight of 31.39g (1.01oz) and Proof finish.
The RMS "Empress of Ireland" was an ocean liner that sank near the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, following a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian coal heaver SS Storstad, in the early morning of May 29th, 1914.
1,012 died, from 1,477 people on board, making it the worst peacetime marine disaster in Canadian History.
This coin's mintage was 7,003 units and its issue price was $109.95 CAD.

Beautiful colorized commemorative coin! It is unbelievable how the RCM comes up with all the coin series! I guess if I looked hard enough, I will find that the US Mint does have quite a few.
The US Mint only makes commemoratives ordered by the Congress. That is two commemoratives each year. Today they may be $5 (gold), $1 (silver and clad) and $.50 (clad).
