Daily Coin # 156 A really Good Looking 50 Francs From 1974
I am pretty sure this is the 2nd newest silver coin I own !(with the exception of bullion "coins" ! On January 3 1974 gold hits record US$121.25 an ounce in London England . Silver hits record US$3.97 an ounce in London England on January 21st 1974 . The huge silver coin was minted in Paris France , although it was intended for circulation , very few ever did . It was struck from .900% silver , weighs 30 grams(27 grams of silver) , and is a whopping 41 mm in diameter by 2.70 mm thick .
The obverse of this coin shows Hercules protecting two women who symbolically represent “Liberty” and “Equality” . Equality (on the right)is shown holding a scale of justice . Liberty (on the left)is shown holding a pole with a phrygian cap on top of the pole . Hercules stands in the center protecting the two women and wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion . On the outer perimeter in French is the motto “LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE” or in English "Liberty – Equality – Brotherhood” .
The reverse of today's coin features the denomination (50 francs) within a wreath of olive and oak branches . The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE surrounding it . A cornucopia and a fish are seen below the denomination within the wreath and the year (1974) below the wreath .
The edge is smooth with multiple raised images on it .

The really bigger sister of yesterday's coin.
It surely must have been a bad move for the French Mint !!!
