Daily Coin # 143 A Nice Victoria Half Crown
Here is yet another beautiful Victorian coin . On January 13th 1883 a fire in circus Ferroni in Berditschoft , Poland kills 430 people . Amsterdam World's Fair opens on May 1st 1883 . The world famous Orient Express makes its first runs , linking Turkey to Europe by rail on October 4th 1883 . Today's coin was minted in London England by the Royal Mint . It was minted in .925 Sterling , weighs 14.14 grams , and is 32 mm in diameter .
The obverse shows us a younghead portrait ( 1st portrait; 2nd type) facing left surrounded by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA (Victoria by the Grace of God) and the year below 1883 .
The reverse features a crowned and quartered shield that depicts the coats of arms of the three countries that made up the UK at that time England , Scotland , and Ireland surrounded by the legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: (Queen of the British territories, Defender of the Faith) .
The edge of this coin is reeded .
