COIN SHOP VISIT - FIVE DOLLARS AS TEN HALF DOLLARS
At my recent Coin Shop Visit, I picked up Five Dollars Face Value of Half Dollars. This is "Constitutional Silver" or "Junk Silver"or simply U.S. Silver Coins. There are ten half dollar coins.
FIVE DOLLARS OF HALF DOLLARS
I picked up Five Dollars of Face Value of Half Dollars from the local coin show. There are ten silver half dollar coins. These are a mix of Walking Liberty Half Dollars and Franklin Half Dollars. The conditions vary; however, they are all 90% Silver. There are some dirty and some shiny. There is some collectible value; however, the minimum value is based on silver content.
At the coin shop, I went to pick up Five Dollars Face Value in Ten Silver Half Dollars. In the Early 1960s, I could have gone to a bank and received these ten silver half dollars after giving them any Five Dollar bill. In my recent posts, I have displayed a variety of Five Dollar bills.

Those are nice. I really like the old half dollars. They have such nice designs on them. I hope you got a great deal. You can read the dates on at least most of those halves, so they might still have some numismatic value.
I got them for 12 times face value. That's a usual price around here in Midwest USA.
I've gotten a few quarters and dime for 11.9 times face value, but the halves are normally more. A lot of shops charge $13 or more for them, but if you know that's on the high side, then you can skip it there and go to the cheaper shops. It's interesting how different shops charge different premiums on certain things.
I notice that some websites charge more for the current year coins like the silver american eagle, and other shops charge more for the previous years. It's kinda funny to see. I wonder if you could actually make money by buying from one and selling to the other. Probably not as there is at least $1.25 round trip cost on most coins. Oh, well.
I have 3 local coin shops. One shop sells bags of $10 face value and there prices are generally too high. Another shop sells 90% silver at a posted price and gives you whatever you request. The third doesn't do either, so I never get US junk silver from there. Thus, I always go to that second shop for my 90% silver.
I have been frequenting the same shop the last few times because I've been buying the silverware. That's a cheap way to add more weight to the stack, but it doesn't go in the same place as the coins and rounds, so it doesn't really feel like I'm adding to it. I need to get back to the other shop that's cheaper for 90%ers and get more of those. That feels like adding.
The shop where I get my 90%ers also has better prices on rounds and coins, so I want to get more random rounds. Unfortunately they don't normally have as good of a selection, so I get stuck with the same old ones. I like getting the lower price, but it's the new coins that keep the Stakitus at bay. I just have to keep working the fine line between the two.
Stack, Stack, and then Stack some more to keep Stakitus at bay. I haven't started with silverware. I look at garage sales and other places, but I never get lucky. I never looked for it at the coin shops. Maybe I'll take a look next time. Cheers
That's it! I've looked at garage sales too, but it's hit or miss. Most coins shops don't have silverwear for sale. They may buy it and then sell it directly to the melters, but not put it out for sale to the general public because it takes up room. The shop I found it has all sorts of random stuff, so it makes sense that they would have it. From what I understand, they do a good business with it too.
My favorite denomination coin in US Constitutional silver! I love it!!! Great pick-up, my friend. Stack on!
Half Dollars are Great. Franklins and Walking Liberties. Fantastic.
I'm just a Canadian stacking a bit of US Constitutional for her stubborn US relatives just to say "I told you so."
Me too, except for the Canadian part... Stacking Silver and waiting to tell US relatives I Told You So.
I was watching GunSmoke on TV recently, and a Beer in the Saloon was a Nickel... One of the Half Dollars of "their time" could buy 10 Beers... In other words, you just made a deal that can be measured in terms of how much would it cost for 100 Beers at your favorite Night Club... Now, tell me if you think you got a good deal...
I think Gunsmoke represented The 1860s or 1870s. These coins were minted in the 1940s through 1960s. During those years, a beer cost around 50 cents to 65 cents.
I think I got a good deal today.
I was going by the Silver content of the Half Dollars or the 1860's, not really the dates on your coins... A Half Dollar back then was able to get you 10 Nickels and 10 Beers... I have a feeling 10 Nickels will soon buy you 10 Beers again...
After a bit of research, $5 for a week's labor was common in 1870's. Maybe averaging $7 for common labor in paper mills. After a week of labor, a laborer could purchase 100 beers.
The 1870's half-dollar had the same content as these half-dollars. The same amount of silver bought 10 beers in 1870s but only one beer in 1940s. $5 bought 100 beers in 1870s, but only 10 beers in 1940s.
Today, the silver content of $5 is worth about $60, so you could get about 12 beers at $5 each. So, we are better off today than in 1940s.
Today, at minimum wage $7.50 at 40/week a laborer gets $300/week and can only get 60 beers at $5 each.
Conclusion: Our new Trade Unit should be BEER!
I'm thinking the Federal Reserve had a hard time dealing with our Silver and Gold Coinage... They were able to fool people for a long time as our Silver and Gold Coinage co-existed with their Debt Notes... It finally did get to the point where it was no longer possible to cover up the difference between our Money and their Money... To this day, they're still doing their Manipulation Tricks... Their Debt Notes are going to become history, very soon... I sure hope we have the Back-Up Plan I've been writing about...
Silver coin has a ring if dropped, i remember that sound at the bank as they machine counted change. Just metal now ( junk metal 🙂 )
I love the sound of that silver ring. Some days I just flipped a coin, my American Silver Eagle coin just to hear it ring
Yes!!! Occasionally i will check out the silverware in the local Goodwill. Usually i find nothing but sometimes i’ll get sterling. I found a English tea strainer spoon hallmarked and stamped .925 for $6.00. I dropped it on the floor and the wife turned arround and grinned .......Score.....💰
As a junk lover, you are making me drool due to your latest articles. Thanks.
I have a good time gathering junk silver and posting about it. It's a lot of fun.
Great Pick Up. Half Dollars are some of my favorites. You got some nice looking ones.
Thanks. I did get one very nice Franklin half dollar. I still need to check the dates on these.
