Mapping Historic Idlewild in an AR / UX
After giving up on finding a comprehensive map of important sites in and around the vacation and retirement community of Idlewild, Michigan for the Idlewild International Film Festival.
We thought it might be fun, challenging and collectively beneficial to produce a map of Idlewild in a game environment like Roblox or Minecraft.
Then we went a little off the farm with the idea of why not print out one big interactive map or build a 3D model of the area using Lego and an AR app to envision future possibilities for Idlewild and other places.
When we realized some of the possible effects this idea could have as an intergenerational story sharing, teaching tool, and collaborative idea engine, we started backward from the end user experience and worked our way back to the technologies that can be employed.
So, what we imagine is laying out an AR map that we can present to members of the Idlewild Community, tag locations and link their stories to sites in online mapping programs then, with a database of sites, we can then attach at or near sites geotags and ‘Target / Tracking / Trigger images’ that open via AR / XR apps on mobile devices and VR / MR goggles.
