Unfortunately for Shostakovich, people denounced his work as having hidden subversive meanings. It was a sort of thing that happened as a result of Stalin's terror, where people would denounce other people to reduce the pressure on himself. Many of Shostakovich's associates were targets of Stalin, and his own high profile led to people wanting to take him down a peg.
He also had a rebellious streak, at least in his earlier work.
