Sound engineering: Voice tuning.

in #steempress6 years ago

Hi guys, today I would like to talk about a subject with a lot of controversy in the world of sound engineering, this subject has been discussed for a long time, since some say that it is unethical to have to tune a voice, which should be tuned from the root, others say that it should be tuned to what is tuned since the recording, as this supports the total harmony in a mix, today we will talk about the good and bad things of the tuning and of different software that are used today for tune voices

Let's talk a little first about what is the tuning of voices through audio editing, and then it is nothing more than helping the voice to reach the exact point of the tuning, this altering the pitch of the notes made by the voice by means of a voice tuning software, such as autotune or melodyne.

This helps in many cases to reach the note if the singer is a little high, to completely tune a voice in case of having a bad singer, or to completely tune an excellent singer to be able to get the most out of the mix at the musical level thanks to the sum of frequencies.

Knowing that there are different reasons why engineers sharpen the voices, let's see what advantages and disadvantages we have when refining voices, because as in everything, to get something you have to sacrifice something else.

Voice tuning

Advantage:

  • By having the voices well tuned can take advantage of the phenomenon of frequency addition in the mix, so we can give more presence to the voices thanks to its tuning which is in perfect harmony with the music.

  • you can tune a voice to correct some notes of a recording with perfect intention but a little loose tuning, something that happens a lot when an artist interprets with emotion at the time of recording.

  • It is a great effect in the voices when the voices are tuned to the point where they no longer modulate, many producers have used this as an effect, a clear example is the abuse that is given to them in genres of urban Latin music.

Disadvantages:

  • In many cases it changes the color of the voice, so if you were looking for a specific color in the voice for a long time, that work will be lost when you want to tune it.

  • If you do not work well the tuning will sound very robotic, so the Autotune effect has the result so characteristic in urban music artists.

  • In doing bad work, you can lose much of the intention you want for a musical project.

Yes, it is difficult to tune without being noticed that has been tuned.

No voice tuning

Advantage:

  • The intention acquired at the time of recording is completely preserved.

  • The color that was obtained by the combination of microphone with the preamp and the voice of the artist at that time, will be perfectly preserved.

  • It sounds very natural when it comes to quality control of the final product.

Disadvantages:

  • You have to work hard on the recording of the voices, since it is almost impossible for a singer to be 100% tuned.

Although it only has one disadvantage to not tune the voices, the difficulty of this disadvantage complicates things a lot, both in recording and mixing.

Voice tuning software

There are many today, but the best known for the comfort of work and its efficiency are Melodyne of the brand Celemony, and autotune of Antares, two companies that have long been leaders in the editing and tuning of voices for a long time.

I particularly try to keep everything very in tune at the root, so I do not have to tune that much, I like to keep things natural and tune some important things for the harmony of the song, so I end up using two different types of tuner, one is the Melodyne, and the other a tuner of the Waves Audio company called waves tune real time, which tunes very well and is not as aggressive as the others.

Well guys, I hope this helps you understand a little better about the tuning of voices, to me in particular it seems an interesting topic, know or not know anything about music, understand the whole process behind what you hear is super interesting.

I leave this video very funny about voices tuning hahaha

Or just deliberately make the vocals sound as alien as "humanly" possible just for funsies and make sure the tap water has plenty of LSD in it?

Hello @moissrams, thank you for sharing this creative work! We just stopped by to say that you've been upvoted by the @creativecrypto magazine. The Creative Crypto is all about art on the blockchain and learning from creatives like you. Looking forward to crossing paths again soon. Steem on!
