Sound engineering: "I could have done things better"
Hi guys, how are you? Today I would like to talk about something that happens a lot to sound engineers or mix engineers, and that musicians or people outside of them do not know, something called by me as "I could have done better" and it's just thinking about that they could have done better things in a mix by listening to it after their delivery.
What does this mean?
This is a problem that occurs in all engineers unless you know how to avoid it, which is very simple, but falling into this is as easy as breathing, as we stick to the projects in which we work, what really is Very well, but then, what is the problem?
The problem of all this is that we must let go of the project, everything has to be delivered and surpassed, what we did at that moment should be the best we can deliver to the client, it happens that by listening to it later you can come up with ideas that time back, they did not go through your head, and this is extremely normal, since every day we are evolving and learning new things, which we probably did not have at that moment, which means that in some cases, we think that we did not do everything we could for the song.
Is this bad?
In many cases yes, since we keep doing things for the song, changing ideas, mixing again from the beginning, this with the pretext that it will be much better, and yes, it will, but this leaves the client a lot of time waiting, so much so that surely at the moment when it is going to go out to the market, the artist is no longer interested in that song, because emotion is already passing, something very characteristic of artists.
How can you avoid it?
There are two ways in which this can be avoided, one is to deliver the mix when you know that it is ready, and not listen to the song anymore, this will allow you to be completely detached from it, so you will not know if the mix seems good to you or bad, the important thing is that at the moment you like you and the artist likes it.
The second way would be to make a pre mix for the artist, this will allow you to better organize your ideas, so when mixing you will have several options of fresh ideas to offer the artist, so you can use this evil for the good of music.
This was all for today guys, I will be talking a lot about audio engineering issues soon, so if you are interested in this particular world, look for more content, as well as if you want me to talk about a particular topic, leave it in a comment.
