Landing on Steemit from other social media or Blog space can make you feel a little different with the different terms used on Steemit. In this post, we will introduce a few terms to make your life easier on Steemit.

If you are new to Steemit and still looking for how to start, you can read more about the sign up process and the basics in our previous blogs:

UPVOTE

Upvotes are much similar to “like” on facebook or that red heart on Instagram except, your upvotes carry a value. No, not that value you carry in your heart for the post owner, a real value which is a combination of your voting power and steem power.

You can upvote another post after 5 seconds.

Upvotes are also an indication of the quality of the post. The more the upvotes, more the post earns and greater the value of the post. So, don’t just double tap on every post.

If you are not a regular user of Steemit, you can make use of your upvotes through other ways. You can sell your vote, you can join a curation trail or set your upvotes for a particular user or tag.

A curation trail has a group of people who automatically follow posts that are curated and chosen by a group of people.

RESOURCE CREDIT

Every user has a limited amount of Resource Credits to use each week. The more transactions a user does, the less Resource Credits they will have left (until they recharge). Users with more Steem Power will have more Resource Credits.

-Steemit Inc.

You need to have resource credit to do any activity on Steemit except reading posts and articles. A report on what all you can do with your existing resource credit can be found at Steemd. In the search bar, enter user name with “@” and press enter.

It will display all the activities to and fro your account and all other details about your account. You can increase your resource credit by powering up your account. How do you do it? Go to your wallet, press on Steem, power up. Make the transaction by entering your active key.

STEEM

Steem is the liquid currency of steem blockchain. You can use this to powerup your account, trade for different currencies in the market or convert it into fiat in the exchanges.

STEEM POWER

You can delegate your steem power to different projects or people. Projects, I can tell you but don’t ask how it is done for different people, that link seems to be not working. We will update on this as soon as we have information.

SBDs

This is the currency value that is equal to the USD. SBD, like Steem, can be traded.

POWER DOWN

No, it does not mean the power supply to their servers is down. This is a process of converting your Steem power into Steem. It can take a long time to complete.

MINNOW TO WHALE

Steem ecosystem is divided in a hierarchy depending on the account strength in terms of steem power.

When you join with not much Steem power to your account and less power for anything, you are called a Minnow. You will be upgraded to Plankton with increasing account value, reputation and other powers.

The biggest dudes are Whales. They have many powers and their upvotes are powerful! Try to get an upvote from them, it can boost your account. There are apps made to present your post to whales too.

Now, please don’t say you are a star fish when you are there, they don’t exist on Steemit!

RESTEEM

Resteem is similar to a “share” or a “retweet”. Basically, if you want to share a post by someone, you press resteem and it will be on your page and will appear in your followers’ feed too.

Resteeming can give more exposure to posts. Many curation programs resteem the featured posts so that their followers get to read the quality content without digging a lot.

DApps

The big D stands for “Decentralized”. These apps are built using blockchain technology, most of them supported on Steem.

Once you start using Steemit, you'll be using many of such DApps. There are number of such apps that work well for different kind of content and each of them are growing fast.

GitHub

If you have never heard about this, you probably don’t need to be. But, this is an open source software. So, if you have an idea and know how to code, you can head out to GitHub and make it a reality.

CURATION

When you are reading or curating a post, you are going through a post, evaluating it, as general as it is in the real world. But when you upvote a post, you will also get a part of the reward, this is called curation reward.

@, # AND !

Once you are on Steemit, you will be seeing a lot of these symbols in different places. But, for starters, if you want to mention someone in a comment or post, you use “@” before their username.

Eg: If you want to mention Malayalam Info Central, you use @m-infocentral and it will be displayed as a link which will land on Malayalam Info Central in a new tab, if someone click on it. This will only happen on Steemit and other Steem supported Dapps. Don’t try that on your WordPress site or website, forget about landing on MIC, you won’t even take off from your page in that case.

“#” can be used in the posts to highlight something. If you click on the hashtag, you will be taken into the search results with posts using the same hashtag.

Not everyone had to deal with bots before, so if you are someone not familiar with bots, then you might have to know this. They always respond to exclamation! So let’s say you want to know your rank on discord channel, you write “!rank” and it will display your rank.

So, basically these are pieces of commands used to execute an action in the designed program of the bots. These commands vary for each function, each bot and each program.

ENDNOTE

Steemit is built on blockchain technology and there are few new terms that represent different functions. Most of these terms perform actions we are used to in other networking sites but with additional features. We hope you have got an idea about a few common terms so that your understanding will be easier when you are on Steemit.

Posts are only updated with visuals on the site due to low RC. Click on this link for updated on posts :)
