Steem Pope Short Sermon: Posting
You're on Steemit. You're here to post material. And you probably want to get paid. But what is the best course of action, and how do you post ethically? Here are some rules to follow!
Do post original content!
Write something original. Draw something original. Photograph something original. Steemit is the perfect place to refine your craft, whatever it may be. It's all about you, so create something that reflects you!
If you have a preexisting blog, re-posting your own material again is perfectly fine. Just be aware that @Cheetah will potentially notice that the material is from elsewhere on the web, so you may want to post on both Steemit and your original blog that the accounts represent one and the same person.
Do not plagiarize!
Don't just copy posts from other websites or any other source. The Steem Papacy does not support intellectual property laws, but your personal integrity matters.
If you do use content created by others, provide attribution. If you didn't make it, attribute it. Quotations and images should include a description and a hyperlink to the source.
Don't just copy an excerpt from another website and include a link as your entire post. Provide substantive commentary on the material. Add something unique that can serve as a basis for discussion.
Should you decline payout?
If for some reason you do want to copy material from someone else without adding anything of your own, as I did some time ago when I posted some old essays from the 1800s as a serialized series, provide attribution and specify that it is not original content, and decline payout. If you're ever in doubt as to the morality of profiting from someone else's work too much, or otherwise think a post does not warrant a payout, the decline payout option is always there.
Conclusion:
As a Steemian, it is your obligation to make sure you are above reproach. All newbies will make some mistakes, but try to learn from them, and make an effort to rise above the mediocrity of spammers and plagiarists with everything you post. It's the only way to get long-term success.
May the Blog be with you, and may the Blockchain bless you. Go forth, and create original content! Amen.

Another fine papal decree. Is there a way of collecting all the pieces of great wisdom. papal and lay, into a welcome pack for new entrants?
It may cut some of the spamming and copying.
I don't know whether there is a good way or not. I just hope the tongue-in-cheek Steem Pope persona might amuse people enough to get some attention from those who need to read.
Great way of sharing. I'm still learning the ropes and it's hard to know whose advice to follow when you're new here. There is conflicting advice depending the source. I don't know if this would be too much work, but perhaps all future Steem Pipe Sermons should keep a running list with links of all previous applicable posts? I know that would have helped me. Particularly because a newbie might not know what topics they need to learn about, so they wouldn't necessarily know what to search for.
It has more chance than finger waving and shouting.

I DON'T SHOUT AT PEOPLE!
Plagiarism is a sin Steem Pope, the punishment of sinners must be a flag. The original content is the only thing that can make us rise.
Upvotes and flagging will be an upcoming topic, never fear.
Great sermon! Amen :)
I've been thinking about this a lot. It's really sad to see such an amazing platform corrupted by people that don't understand the finality of it. Rewarding originality, creating a really good community and sharing the world from our point of view is an amazing way to win some money. Yet, so many are as lazy as to plagiarize content when creating something out of the blue brings so much satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. All the better when it gets voted!
The Steem Pope might be nice a nice way of reaching out to them, but I'm sure that at some point, there will be Steem Crusades, and that my friend, will bring down the guillotine over heretic behavior. May the Blockchain be with us all when that happens.
-A.
The Steem Pope will only consider calling for crusades against spam and plagiarism.
Hello Steem Pope, I have never thought of doing plagiarism but what Cheetah does he do if he finds plagiarism in Steemit?
Cheetah is a bot. It posts a link to what it thinks the source material might be. Sometimes it can be way off base, but usually it accurately identifies the source. If it's a quotation in your post used properly for commentary and with proper attribution, you'll be fine. If it's blatant plagiarism, Steemcleaners might flag your content, eliminate your earnings, and penalize your reputation.
Thank you
