The Itch to Upgrade Your Monsters

Upgrading your cards will often require you to spend your precious STEEM. This blog post will teach you how to be a little more effective in this process.

Imagine the following scenario we've all been through: you navigate to the Steem Monsters website, click the "Battle" button, craft your team, face-off against your opponent, and lose. Why did you lose? Did your Splinter choice not take advantage of the variable rules for that battle? Did you make a mistake in card placement? Or, perhaps, were your opponents cards a much higher level than yours?

You decide to take a look at your collection and upgrade some of your cards.

As I detailed in a recent blog post entitled: Steem Monsters: How to Beat High-Level Players with Low-Level Cards, high level cards aren't the only way to win a battle, but they certainly are a factor.

How To Be Smart With Your Upgrades

There's one way to upgrade your cards: combine them. Take three (3) of your Level 1 Lord Arianthus and, boom, you have a single Level 2 card. There's at least three ways to receive more cards to upgrade:

  1. Purchase randomly generated Booster Packs on the Steem Monsters website.
  2. Purchase the exact cards you need on the PeakMonsters market.
  3. Trade with a friend (leave a comment below if you'd like to trade with me!)

But when you leveled up that card, what did you gain? Before you upgrade ANY of your cards, always take a look a its stats.

Take my Level 3 Lord Arianthus, for example:

He's hot, he's sexy, he looks a little bit like St. John The Baptist as portrayed in The Invisibles, and he has a current market value of $6.30. Also take note: I need six more of his cards in order to upgrade him to Level 4.

Now, let's take a look at his stats:

lastats.png

Currently at Level 3, he holds all four of his abilities (which is really what makes this card special.) He also received a health increase of two (2) when upgrading from Level 1 to Level 2. If I wanted to upgrade him to max level, not only would it cost $7.56 worth of STEEM, but it would also* only increase his health by ONE point*.

Is that $7.56 of STEEM worth a single health increase? Or, could that $7.56 be best spent on other cards?

These investigations are necessary for every card you intend to upgrade in order to make sure you're building the most effective decks possible to climb the leaderboards in your game.

Let Me Know What You Think!

That's it folks, I'd love to hear your additional thoughts in the comments below and please considering following my Steemit blog for future content!

Hi, great post :) I always look at the stats first too.

A little (stupid) question: What exactly is Lord Arianthus good for as he does not attack at all?

No, this is a great question!

Lord Arianthus is good to act as a Tank in the First position in a similar way as one would use the "Peaceful Giant" card from the Neutral Splinter. However, at Level 3, he's quite a powerful Tank with the four following abilities:

Shield - Reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks.
Void - Reduced damage from Magic attacks.
Magic Reflect - When hit with Magic damage, does reduced Magic damage back to the attacker.
Thorns - When hit with a Melee attack, does damage back to the attacker.

Now, non-attacking Tanks aren't as useful for every rule-set (like when all Monsters have the "Sneak" ability) but he's an amazing Tank choice IMO once he's upgraded to at least Level 3.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you for the explanation, now I finally know what the Lord Arianthus card is good for. I once had this card and played with it but never figured out what the card did during a match haha

I followed you and I'm looking forward to read more awesome posts from you :D

Thank you!! Reading your tourney post now :)
