Steem Kitchen Contest #3 - Cheap & Cheerful Sausage & Cheese Roly-Poly
When my sons were little, I was fortunate in having a half day job so I would fetch them from nursery school at lunchtime and be with them for the rest of the day.
A favourite pastime if the weather was not good for playing outdoors, would be helping mom bake. I'd give them their own cookie dough and pan and by the time their pans went into the oven, the cookie dough looked somewhat discoloured, even though they were told to wash their hands before we start baking. But little boys can get distracted as we all know ;)
Their friends also knew if they visited, there would always be a treat waiting in the cookie jars.
One of our favourite bakes was a Sausage & Cheese Roly-Poly - almost like a savoury swiss roll.
A scone dough is rolled in a rectangle, spread with a fruity chutney, sweet chilli sauce or mustard, grated Vienna Sausages (Hot Dogs), Spring Onions and grated Cheese and rolled up like a Swiss Roll. Slits are cut across but sometimes we have little disasters in the kitchen, like here with my bake when the generous filling popped right out of its cosy blanket ;)
Kitchen disasters happen every day but still makes its way to hungry tummies
Individual slices are served with a salad and makes a really nice light meal. This makes a real nice lunch box treat as well as it can also be eaten cold.
But let's get down to the business of the day, and that's baking, so I will share my cheap & cheerful recipe for Sausage & Cheese Roly-Poly with all our Steemkitchen cooks!
A budget saver tip - I buy butter when it's on special and freeze it, same with cheese but the latter has to be grated before freezing
Cost: ZAR 73,60 /USD 5,08 / Steem 6,96 OR Steem 1,74 per serving
Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 30-40 minutes
Baking Time: 25 minutes
RECIPE
Scone dough
- 625ml Self Raising Flour - ZAR 7,50
- 10ml Baking Powder - pantry staple
- 125 gram Butter - ZAR 12
- 1 Egg - ZAR 2,50
- 50ml Milk + 50ml Water - ZAR 0,60
Filling
- 100ml Chutney/ Sweet Chilli Sauce or Mustard - ZAR 2
- 500 gram Chicken & Cheese Viennas (Hot Dogs), grated - ZAR 35
- 1 sprig Spring Onions & Parsley, diced - free from my garden
- 150 gram Cheddar Cheese - grated - ZAR 14
Method
1. Sift flour and baking powder together & rub in the butter
2. Beat liquid ingredients together and add to flour mixture, mix lightly to a softish scone dough
3. Roll scone dough into a rectangle on a floured surface
4. Spread chutney on top
5. Top with grated Vienna sausages & spring onions + parsley
6. Lastly top with grated Cheese & lightly press filling down
7. Roll up carefully like a Swiss roll - my hands were full of flour & I was so intent on rolling this up & not breaking the dough that I forgot to take a pic of that step
8. Using a large lifter, place on buttered baking sheet
9. Shape into a half moon, cut slits in scone dough but not all the way through & glaze with a little egg wash - I reserved a little egg & milk for that
10. Sprinkle a little extra cheese on top
11. Bake at 190C fan oven (200C regular) for about 25 minutes till a nice golden brown
Oops, filling popped right out of the scone dough
All cheesy and oozy
This really is a delicious light meal for kids of all ages :)
