How Tidal Understanding Can Occur At Sea

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Tidal Water is the rise and fall of sea levels due to the effects of the gravitational force given by the moon and the sun when combined with the Earth's rotation. The ups and downs occur at various levels and frequencies, depending on the location. The coastline where two pairs are almost the same height and the two tides going on every day can be said of a semi-diurnal tide.

The occurrence of just one high and one tidal every day is known as a diurnal pair. The timing and amplitude of tides in various local areas are affected by the sun and moon alignment, tidal patterns in the deep ocean, shoreline shape, and other forces.

Tidal energy is the energy generated from the tidal water and make it energy in another form, especially the district. Tidal energy is one type of renewable energy that is relatively more predictable in number than wind energy and solar energy.

Although not yet widely used, tidal energy has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than the wind and the sun. Among sources of renewable energy, tidal energy has traditionally suffered from relatively high cost and limited availability of sites with sufficiently high tidal ranges or flow velocities, thus constricting its total availability. source

Relatively more predictable in number than wind energy and solar energy. Its current utilization is not yet widespread because of the high initial cost and limited locations that have sufficient tides.

However much research and further development continue to be done to improve the efficiency and critical limits of the energy it generates so as to obtain various methods for extracting this type of energy.

This happens, tidal energy has been used in Europe and the east coast of North America in the form of turbines, converting them into mechanical energy and used to grind grain. New in the 19th century, this process was used to generate electricity. The first large-scale tidal power plant in the world is the Rance Tidal Power Station built in France and started operating since 1966.

For purposes of energy capture, water is similar to wind, except that seawater is more than 800 times denser than air, essentially making it easier to capture energy. Moreover, whereas the wind can come from any direction, in most locations the tides flow only in and out, reducing the complexity of the mechanisms required to harvest that energy.

The Seawater is a fluid with a higher density, up to 800 times the air. In addition, the nature of tidal phenomena that can be predicted by region followed by continuous monitoring is able to maintain the supply of electrical energy from this type of power plant.

Tidal power is basically a form of hydropower that generates electrical power through the utilization of tidal flow. Tidal power even though it has great potential is still not widely used. Tidal Energy or Tidal Power as it is also called, is another form of hydro power that utilises large amounts of energy within the oceans tides to generate electricity.

The working principle of tidal power is not too complicated: once the tide comes in, the water will be stored in the dam, and when the water recedes, the water in the dam will be channelled through the pipe to move the turbine, which then generates electricity.

Tidal power has several advantages. First, tidal power is a source of renewable energy because the tidal on our planet is caused by the interaction of the gravitational force between the Moon and the Sun, as well as the rotation of the earth, meaning that the tidal power will not run out for at least several billion years.

One major advantage of tidal power compared to some other renewable energy sources (especially wind energy) is that tidal power is a very reliable source of energy. This is understandable because we can predict when the tide will rise and then recede because the tidal sea water is much more cyclic than the random weather pattern. Also, tidal power produces no greenhouse gases such as fossil fuels, and such hazardous waste is also feared to occur in the use of nuclear energy.

The small reservoirs and dams needed to harness the tidal power can also play a very important role in protecting the nearby towns or harbours from the dangerous waves in the event of a storm. Tidal power is a very efficient energy source, with 80% efficiency, which means that tidal energy efficiency is almost three times greater than coal and petroleum which has 30% efficiency, and also significantly higher than solar energy efficiency and wind.

The main disadvantage of tidal energy is tidal power generation is very expensive to build, which means tidal power is still ineffective in terms of cost when compared to fossil fuel plants. However, tidal power plants are built only once and maintenance costs are relatively low.

In real life the tidal energy can only be done on the beach with good tidal differentials, meaning that not many locations are really suitable for the type of tidal power plants, and also only generate electricity as long as there is an average tidal wave going around 10 hours every day.

Tidal power can also have a negative impact on the environment; generator turbines can disrupt the movement of ships and large marine animals around the canal. While tidal power plants can disrupt the migration of fish in the oceans, and even kill fish populations when passing turbines.

There is no doubt that tidal power has great potential, but there are also some serious drawbacks that hinder tidal power has high commercial value. There still needs to be a lot of development in order for tidal power technologies to be cost-effective because the huge potential is not enough to make competitive tidal power with the dominant fossil fuel in the moment.

What Causes Tidal Occurrence

The factors that cause tidal events based on the equilibrium theory are the rotation of the earth on its axis, the moon's revolutions towards the sun, the earth's revolution against the sun. While based on dynamic theory is the depth and breadth of the waters, the effect of the earth rotation (Coriolis force), and the basic friction.

Tides may seem simple on the surface, but the ins and outs of tides confounded great scientific thinkers for centuries they even led Galileo astray into a bunk theory. Today people know that the gravitational pulls between the earth, moon and sun dictate the tides. The moon, however, influences tides the most. The moon's gravitational pull on the earth is strong enough to tug the oceans into bulge. If no other forces were at play, shores would experience one high tide a day as the earth rotated on its axis and coasts ran into the oceans' bulge facing the moon. source

There are also some local factors that can affect tides in waters such as, the bottom of the sea floor, the width of the bay, and so on. So that different location has different tidal characteristics. Sea tides are the result of gravitational pull and centrifugal effects. Centrifugal effects is a push to the outside of the centre of rotation. Gravity varies directly with mass but is inversely proportional to distance.

Although the size of the moon is smaller than the sun, the gravitational pull of the moon is twice larger than the tensile force of the sun in generating sea tides because the moon is closer than the distance from the sun to the earth.

While the Sun and the rotation of the Earth both have some tidal impact, the location of the Moon has the biggest affect on the tide. The gravity of the Moon causes a high tide both on the side of the Earth directly below the Moon (sublunar tide) and the opposite side of the Earth (antipodal). Low tides are on the sides of the Earth 90 degrees away from the Moon. See the picture below. source

The gravitational pull pulls the seawater toward the moon and the sun and produces two gravitational tidal bulges. The moon and the second sun give the gravitational pull of the earth to its magnitude depending on the magnitude of the objects that attract each other.

The moon gives gravity greater than the sun. This is due to the fact that the moon is smaller than the sun, but it is closer to the earth. These forces result in seawater, which makes up 71% of the earth's surface, bubbling on the axis facing the moon.

The tides are formed due to the rotation of the earth beneath this bubbling water surface, resulting in the periodic rise and decline of the sea surface in coastal areas.

The gravitational force of the sun also has the same effect but to a smaller degree. Coastal areas have twice the tide and twice receded over a period of slightly over 24 hours.

The vertical water movement associated with the ups and downs is matched, accompanied by a horizontal water movement called the tidal current. The sea surface is constantly changing every moment due to tidal movements.

Since cycle time can be estimated (approximately every 12.5 hours), its electric supply is relatively more reliable than a wave-powered power plant. However, according to darvill.clara.net site, there are only about 20 places in a world that has been identified as a suitable place for development powered tidal power plants.

With tidal phenomenon is defined as the rise and fall of sea level as a result of the attraction of celestial objects, especially the sun and the moon to the mass of water on earth. Tidal energy is the energy generated by the tidal phenomenon of tidal phenomena. The Sea Tidal Energy can be used as an alternative energy in which this energy comes from tidal phenomena.
