When we hear the word shark, what comes to mind is a 'great white', 'hammerhead' or 'tiger shark' but what about the 'goblin shark'. Deep in the ocean at depths of more than a 100 m, lurks the goblin shark and as it's name might suggest it's a little strange looking.

The goblin shark is a pinkish-gray colour and are rather flabby with small rounded fins, because of this scientists believe that goblin sharks are probably pretty sluggish. What really sets this shark apart from other sharks is it's head. The goblin shark has a flattened snout protuding from the top if it's head, below the snout is the jaws.

The jaws are extendable, when prey is near, the goblin shark extends it's jaws to the end of it's snout and can either snatch it's prey or suck it in. The goblin shark has 35 to 53 rows of upper teeth and 31 to 62 rows in the lower jaw. The teeth of the goblin shark resemble long, sharp thorns in the front and sides, and small and flat in the back.

Individual goblin sharks have been spotted in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. They live in depths of 100 m to 1,300 m and are rarely seen and caught, because of this scientists still know very little about goblin sharks more than a 100 years after it's discovery.
