Building social and emotional learning in the classroom
As a teacher, there are many things to keep in mind when we are in class. One is to know the social and emotional characteristics of our students. We know, every child has a different background.
This is not easy to do. Especially if the number of students in the classroom exceeds the available capacity. But at least we know the names of our students or the habits they do.
Social and emotional approach in learning is the atmosphere of feeling and social atmosphere in the classroom as a group of individuals. Social and emotional approaches tend to fall within the realm of psychology. So here an interpersonal relationship exists between the teacher and his students in a positive relationship.
Good social and emotional relationships can also determine a fun learning environment. Thus, there is no great distance between the students and the teachers in the classroom. However, to build a good social and emotional environment also depends on the teacher in his/her efforts to carry out teaching and learning activities, which is realized with effective human relationship.
There are several strategies that can be done for social and emotional learning approaches:
- Mindfulness is: paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, non- judgmentally.
- Challenge Thinking – thoughts influence feelings
- Persistence & Determination
- Empathy – listen to be surprised
- Gratitude
The above strategy should start from yourself as a teacher. You must treat your students well to attract their attention. Keep the unpleasant impressions your students feel. For example, you are often angry at the behavior of your students, or you are considered a scary teacher when you teach in the classroom.
You can also open yourself in front of the students. You listen to every problem facing the students. Then give the best solution to the problem. As a teacher, self-management is also necessary. With self-management, you are able to manage the emotions of your students and their behavior in different situations.
And the most important is your ability relation skills, the ability to build and maintain a healthy and beneficial relationships with diverse individuals and groups. Includes communicating clearly, actively listening, cooperating, rejecting inappropriate social pressures, constructively negotiating conflicts, and seeking and offering assistance when necessary.
Building a social and emotional approach to learning is an appropriate step in creating a fun and effective learning environment. I'm trying to do that.
We can build the learning as a humorous teacher too. We have to avoid being a killer teacher that make a terrible class for them. As far as we listen, we will understand.
Benar sekali @teukumukhlis
Iyaa Bang,, saya sangat setuju seperti cerita Abang.
Salam perkenalan denganmu Bang @teukumukhlis
