Definition of visual processing

The ability to process, interpret and comprehend what you see "visually" correctly. Visual processing enables a learner to recognize and interpret letters, numbers and symbols. Some children who has a learning disability also has visual processing disorder.

Types of visual processing disorder

  1. Visual discrimination issues
    These learners struggle to see the difference between two similar letters, shapes or objects like mixing up letters b,d.
  2. Visual figure-ground discrimination issues
    These learners struggle to pull out a shape or character from its background.
  3. Visual sequencing issues
    These learners struggle to tell the order of symbols, words or images. They also struggle write answers on a separate sheet or skip lines when reading. Sometimes these learners reverse or misread letters, numbers and words.
  4. Visual-motor processing issues
    These learners struggle with the feedback from their eyes to be able to coordinate the movement of other parts of the body. They often have difficulty in writing within lines or margins, they can also bump into things and then have trouble copying from a book.
  5. Long- or short term visual memory issues
    These learners struggle to recall long term and/or short term visual memory. This in return may cause these children to struggle with reading and spelling.
  6. Visual spatial issues
    These learners often have issues to tell where objects are in their space. This also includes how far things are from them or each other. They can also have a tough time reading maps.
  7. Visual closure issues
    These learners have issues identifying an object when only certain parts are visible.
  8. Letter and symbol reversal issues
    These learners often have issues with switching letters or numbers when they are writing, sometimes even trouble with letter formation which in return can affect there reading, writing and math skills.

Symptoms of Visual Processing Disorder

  1. They don't pay attention when they do visual tasks.
  2. They are easily distracted by too much visual information.
  3. The are restless or inattentive during video or any visual presentation.
  4. They lack any interest in movies or television.
  5. They have difficulty with tasks that requires copying, even taking notes from the board.
  6. They reverse or misread letters, numbers and words.
  7. They bump into things.

Teach these learners a variety of strategies to cope with everyday life within academic, emotional and personal.
