Clean water: A basic need to survive (Information sheet, project - Make your own water filter.)
Not all who will be reading this post (lesson) are in the fortunate position to have access to clean water. There are countries, especially in third world countries where the access to clean water is very limited or do not exist at all.

Today I am going to teach you how to make a homemade water filter for those times when you don't have access to clean water you will be able to make clean water.

What do you need?
- 2-liter soda bottle cut in half (by an adult)
- napkins or paper towels or coffee filter
- gravel, sand and cotton balls for your filter.
Steps
- Put the top half of the soda botlle upside-down in the bottom half. In the top half you will build the filter and the bottom half will hold the filtered water.
- First put in the cotton balls (about 1-2 inches of cotton).
- Then put in about an inch of activated charcoal or the sand.
- Add about 2 inches of gravel.
- Now add the larger gravel or small rocks to the bottle. About 2-inches will be enough.
- Your filter is ready.
- Throw in dirty/muddy water and see how it will, slowly, move through the filter and come out clean in the bottom half of your filter.

This is a great way to create awareness for children. Especially in urban areas, most of them may not see the need for such knowledge. Nonetheless, it is crucial that they know. Who knows? They may need that skill some day
I grew up in a rural area, more a farm school, but nonetheless. We had a teacher that constantly reminded us to be gratefull for what we have because we never know when we won't have it anymore. And every year the grade 7 group went to walk the great Fish River Canyon and he made sure that every single one of that group knew how to filter water and they always used that knowledge.
Good post. It's the same method used in water filtration plants but on a large scale. I recommend adding bleach in the filtered water and waiting 24 hrs before drinking that water.
