Be a teacher who leaves a mark in the hearts of students

I do not know how, but after so many years, I still remember my teacher Aurora from the first grade as if it were yesterday. And I do not remember it precisely because it taught me to read, write and mathematical operations. I remember more of her because of the hugs she gave to all the students as soon as she entered the class. She called us one by one, she told us that she was very proud of us, and she dedicated words of motivation to us.

I also remember, that each day, we changed our deskmate, and the final ten minutes of the classes, we always used them to say good things about the partner with whom we shared a table. Now I am aware that the educational stage from first grade to third grade was the most wonderful in my life. And all for the moments that my teacher gave us without asking anything in return.

Obviously, teaching children to read and write is an incredibly important task. But from my perspective it is not what leaves the students' mark. It is not what they are recorded practically for the rest of their lives. After my Primary Education teacher, I did not have more teachers who would give me unforgettable moments even in High School. Baccalaureate? You will ask.

Yes, in that harder stage that lasts, my classmates and I, we run into Maria, our tutor and language teacher. A teacher who won us from the beginning by her sweetness, by her motivation, by her active listening, by her desire to collaborate with the students and her understanding. It is curious that from elementary school to high school, do not remember too much all teachers that I have been having. And I'm really not lying to you.

Being a teacher, should not mean to pass without pain or glory for the educational stages of students. Each teacher, regardless of the course they are in, should contribute many things to the students. Many things that go beyond the academic content, the subjects and the exams. Being a teacher, should mean having a small gap in the hearts of each student that has been taught.

Believe me, one of the most beautiful things that can happen to a teacher is that a student recognizes him after the years. And I say it, because a few days ago, in the queue of a supermarket, a child from the Infant School in which I did the internship recognized me instantly. He told his mother: "Mom, it's Marian, my teacher when I was little". When I went out to buy, he was reminding me of the activities that I prepared for my last week with them. He remembered perfectly and it was incredible.

Unfortunately, today students learn almost everything by memorization, and although they remember it over the years, it is not a well assimilated learning. There are many other contents, which will not even be remembered when they are older. In fact, many elementary school children say that the most remarkable thing they have learned during the courses has been reading and writing.

And that's it. Obviously, learning to read and write marks a before and after in the life of any student. It is clear that that opens a lot of doors and gives them access to a lot of knowledge. But a primary student should emphasize more things about his learning. Many more. And there, from my way of seeing it, is when the work of each teacher is incredibly important.

In the centers there are programs, there are teaching units and there are objectives and contents to follow and achieve. I can understand that. But it is the teacher's task, to use new methodologies to apply with their students, to motivate them, and to awaken interest and creativity in them. The objectives can be carried out equally through project learning, cooperative learning and game-based learning.

They can be carried out by debating and by the opinions of each student. For a teacher to sit in his chair, and only get up from there to explain something on the board, and only take exams and grades into account, will not inspire or excite the students at all. And it is normal.

I am sure that those teachers who have tried every day to give the best of themselves, who have surprised students, who have made learning something fun and interesting, who have been involved with students and their families, who have well-known, that they have understood, that they have tried to help in the situations that they could do, that they have listened to their students.

That they have taken them into account, that they have gone far beyond the academic and intellectual content, will have a small space in the hearts and minds of the students. Sitting in a chair with a textbook, does not define much the profession of teachers at heart and everything they do in their day to day. Being a teacher has to mean much more. It should mean enjoying the truth of every moment in the classroom. And yes, it should mean giving unforgettable moments to the students.

That is why I invite all teachers and motivators to find a way to leave an unforgettable mark in the memory of their students as I guarantee that it is something truly satisfying and that will impel them to continue working with much more dedication and much more desire to continue impatiendo values and knowledge, in order to put that grain of sand that contributes to form people of good for the future of our humanity.

Greetings and I hope you in my next post!
