Problem faced by girls in our society

This happened a few days back. There was a short circuit in our building and soon it caught fire. It wasn't widespread but still was scary. It was around 11 pm. Everyone in our building ran downstairs. People were shouting and howling. It was very chaotic.

I was standing with my Husband and a girl joined us. We met a few times in the stairs earlier. Just casual ‘Hi’ ‘Hello’ type. We started talking.

She- How did you guys come to know about the fire?

Me- We were watching television and light was fluctuating. Soon there was a strong burning smell. We heard people shouting. Then we ran. What about you?

She- I just came back from office. Had my dinner and was about to sleep. I heard them shouting. I took a peek from the window. Everyone was outside. Then I also ran. Thank God I woke up immediately. I don't know what would have happened.

Me- Yeah we all are lucky. It didn't happen late night. That's actually a relief.

She- I’ll probably go to my aunt’s place. I informed her. She is a bit worried.

The conversation continued.

The fire brigade was already informed. They came within 15-20 minutes. Soon the situation was taken under control and things were back to normal within an hour.

We all were marching back towards our apartments. A lady stopped her.

Lady- Priya, there are men here. You shouldn't have worn those shorts.

Another lady joined her- Aise achha nhi lagta hai. (It doesn't look good.)

We were shocked at their comments. Those were highly inappropriate. She didn't say anything but was obviously angry and disappointed. This is Delhi I am talking about.

Her dress was something like this -

After those ladies were gone, Priya said to me, “All the uncles were in undershirts and shorts. How come my dress was inappropriate?? There was a fire. Should I run or should I change first?”.

I couldn't agree more.

No matter what the emergency is, society expects a woman should always be well-dressed.

Instead of being thankful that all were safe and nothing tragic happened, somehow Moral policing became the first priority.
