Team Speaking (The Forum Debate)

Another exiting method of debating is Team Speaking or Forum debates.

This may be used against other schools, or in the classroom by dividing students into teams of four.

It is important to understand how a debate works. The team will be given a topic which is called a “resolution” and your team will have to decide whether to take the affirmative or negative stance to the resolution. Whether you will be assigned to a certain stance or asked to choose, you will have to be ready for every possibility.

Team Speaking is Comprised of Four Speakers

  • There is a chairperson and three other speakers, each of whom will speak on a different aspect of the same topic.
  • The leader of the group is the chairperson. He or she introduces the topic, introduces and links the speeches and concludes by summing up the entire presentation.
  • The techniques for all four speakers are the same as those stated for individual public speaking.
  • It is important for the group to be unified and listen to one another's speeches, without detracting in any way from each other. (***Try to listen as if hearing the speech for the first time.)
  • Always adhere to the specified time limits.
  • A Adjudicator decides on the winning team.
