Understand how children see the world
Children see the world differently by becoming aware of their 'ages and stages.'
Each step in a child's growth is important and no step can be skipped. There are certain Universal principles of growth. Children learn how to turn over, how to sit, how to crawl and then to walk and run. Some things must come ahead of other things and no step can be skipped.
The physical development can be seen and a constant evidence is supplied. But, as surely as the different stages of physical development are true, so is the development of the 'unseen' areas of emotion and human relations also true.
Things in these areas are largely unseen and there is no direct evidence. It is extremely important for parents not to only focus and understand the physical development, but to also understand the emotional, mental and spiritual areas of development and that we as parents never attempt to shortcut, bypass or violate this important development. We must understand the development of children in all areas.
If we do not make a sincere effort to understand our children's development and to communicate with them on their level of understanding and awareness, we will find ourselves making unfair expectations of them and being frustrated when we can't seem to get through to them.
When we want our children to perform a task, the following questions must first be considered:
- a value question: Should the child do it?
- a competency question: Can the child do it?
- a motivation question: Does the child want to do it?
If it is a value question, the solution will lie in the building up of the emotional area of development and educate. Education means " to draw forth" and in this case, to provide a deep and proper explanation that tends to draw forth the sense of "this is what I should do."
If it comes to a competency question the answer will usually lie in training. Training means " to put in," in this case, " to put into the child" the knowledge and skills of how to perform the task. Educating and training are both important and which we as parents can use depending on the situation and the nature of the problem.
If it is a " motivational" question, then the answer will be in emphasizing the desired behavior either coming from the outside or from the inside or a combination of the two. To motivate, you could provide extrinsic rewards, such as an allowance or recognition of some sort of a benefit or a plus point. You can also stress the intrinsic rewards, the inner peace, and satisfaction that comes when people do things because it is the "right" thing to do when they listen to and obey their conscience.
