Exodus 14:5 -15:20

A few days after the Israelites left Egypt, the Lord made the Pharao stubborn. The Pharaoh regretted that he had let them go. He and his officials then said: We made a mistake. We let the Israelites go, and now they are no longer our slaves. He followed the Israelites and chased them, but the Lord protected the Israelites when they left.

When Pharaoh approached, the Israelites became afraid. They prayed to God and asked him to help them. But to Moses they said, Why did you take us away to die in the desert? What did you do to us? Why did you bring us out of Egypt? We told you in Egypt to let us go so that we can be the Egyptians' slaves. It is better for us to be their slaves, better than to die in the wilderness. But Moses said to the Israelites, Do not be afraid. Stay where you are. You will see today that the Lord will save you. You see the Egyptians today, but you will never see them again.

The Lord will make war himself and He will fight for you against the Egyptians. You have to be quiet. The Lord went with them every day. In that day He was in a cloud that led them and showed them the right way.

At night the Lord was in a fire to give light to them. Therefore they could walk during the day and at night.

The Lord and the cloud always stayed with the Israelites. The angel of the Lord was always before the Israelites, but He now stood behind them. The cloud was then between the Egyptians and the Israelites. The cloud was dark with the Egyptians, but in the night the cloud made light for the Israelites. The Egyptians and the Israelites could not come close to each other that night. Moses held his hand over the sea, and the Lord sent a strong east wind. The wind blew all night and pushed the water away and a road open up through the sea.

The Israelites went through the sea on the ground. The water was for them like a wall beside their right side and along their left side. The Egyptians followed the Israelites to the inside of the sea. All the horses of Pharaoh and his warriors and the men went into the sea. Early the next morning, the Lord looked down from the fire and the cloud to the Egyptians' soldiers. He made the soldiers very scared. He dropped the wheels of the war carts so the carts could not move forward. Then the Egyptians said, We must flee from the Israelites, for the Lord is fighting for them against us. The Lord said to Moses, Hold your hand over the sea again. Then the water will come back over the Egyptians, over their warriors and over the men. Moses held his hand to the sea, and when the day break the next morning, the sea was washed back as it was before. The Egyptians wanted to run away, but the water went over them.

Thus the Lord drowned the Egyptians in the sea. The water came back, and the sea closed the battle carts, and closed the men and all the soldiers of Pharaoh, all that followed the Israelites into the sea. None of them were left. The Lord saved the Israelites that day from the Egyptians. The Israelites saw that the Egyptians died in the sea. The Israelites have seen that the Lord can do what he wants to do. He killed the Egyptians. The Israelites became scared of the Lord and they respected Him.

They believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said,

I want to sing to the Lord, for He is the Great God. He threw the horses and the men riding on them into the sea. I gain strength from the Lord, He makes me strong. He saved me. He is my God, and I will praise him. He is the God of my forefathers, and I will honor him. The Lord can make war, His name is the Lord. Lord, who is like you? Not one of the gods. Who can do what you can do? Who is as holy as you? Nobody. Everyone praises you and singing the wonderful things you do. The Lord will be king forever and ever!

"Moses's sister, Miriam, was a prophet. She took a tambourine in her hand. All the women took tambourines and followed her. They danced. Miriam said to them, Sing to the Lord, for He is the Great God. He threw the horses and the men riding on them into the sea.
