Introduction

Who of us is not guilty of shifting important tasks or work that should have been done earlier? Often procrastination is not done because we are busy with serious engagements. Most times, we do it just to play or have fun or just to lazy around. Most people find themselves rushing over very important work at the deadline though they had all the time in this world to finish the task at a comfortable time. So if you find yourself always procrastinating, then its time to stop putting things off and face them. Here are 3 practical suggestions that might be of help.

1. If you lack motivation, think of a noble reason to do it early: Sometimes, we just feel like to put it off is easier or more comfortable for us because the task is just boring. We are afraid anytime we face this particular work because we even hate the idea of thinking about it. If so, you need to think why the task must be done. For example, why should you go shopping? Because the family will starve if you dont. Why should you do laundry? because you will look foolish putting on dirty cloths. So you see that if you understand that it is very important to do the task, then you might find some grit to get it done earlier.

2. If the work seems too big, break it down into smaller tasks: True, some work that should be done seem overwhelming. So putting them off is the easier option. If that is the case, then you need to divide the big work into smaller tasks. We make progress and reduce the workload when we accomplish smaller tasks. And when we see that a big work consisting of 10 smaller tasks have been reduced to say 6 tasks, we feel motivated to start up the next task when we finish the previous one. With time and steady effort, the once huge work gets done in no time. If you keep looking at a big work as a whole, procrastination will always get the better of you!

3. If you are already too busy, set priorities: We cant do it all on time if we have too many things doing. So make a list of all that should be done in order of importance. Set the time to accomplish each task and stick to it. Some people might ague that having a schedule makes them feel restrictive. But is it really restrictive to have a schedule and stick to it?

Think again! The fact is, when you make a schedule, you control your time rather than allowing your time to control you. And that reduces your stress. “Having a plan calms me down and puts things into perspective,” says a girl named Kelly.

Conclusion

Procrastination is a bad habit that must be done away with. It steals your time and energy and puts you under stress. When we learn to do any work as they come, we feel a sense of accomplishment. Though it might seem easier to just put things off, the ugly part is that whatever you put off is still waiting for you. But when you overcome any challenging assignment early, you become stronger and motivated!

As a serial procrastinator, I've found that number one isn't always reliable. The most effective way for me to deal with low motivation has been to physically move to a specific location. For example, it's usually much easier for me to go to a Starbucks to work for 30 minutes than it is to start a project at home/school/etc.

Leaving everything for the deadline will not be good, because the stress that is generated is great (it has happened to me) and maybe things do not go as expected. The best thing is to make a list with the priorities and to establish each one your term, as an objective that must be fulfilled and you will see that you will have time for everything. It's just a matter of organizing and managing time.

Setting goals and targets towards achieving that goal is also very important. Goals help you arrange your priority mentioned in number 3 in a way that you know which priority comes first and which will help achieve the next target.

@focusnow, These points are absolutely true. And there is one more thing and that is, we should change our thought process and by that i mean, instead of finding a reason for not to work we should find a reason why we should work now.

Procrastination is a hobby for me especially if that which I have to do requires a lot of work or time :)

I think this article helped with some key ways to fight against it as well a fellow comment about setting goals. Thank you!
