How Writing Can Help Your Teaching

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

Many teachers go into writing in order to tell wonderful stories. They also do it because they want to entertain and teach through storytelling.

And there's another reason. They write because they need it. Teaching can be exhausting... physically, and mentally. It requires a lot from you. And writing is a good therapy, which can widen your view about all the situations you live day after day in your job.

I started writing almost immediately after I got my degree in education. And let me tell you something. It teaches a lot about yourself as well and the world around you because when you are writing, your mind is describing details and giving them meaning... kind of analyzing everything.

projection

When you write, you're projecting your ideas, feelings and emotions. And since teaching is very demanding because you're practically sharing moments with your students that in most cases surpass the line of personal matter. Students can have problems originated in their homes, and they manifest them in school.

So, they ask for your intervention as a teacher both directly or indirectly. Many of us come to platforms such as Steemit to share our experiences to get good insights. And by doing it, we put into canvas (the writing platform) everything that we are going through.

From there we can get a big picture. It's like taking a long walk to cool off in order to come up with better solutions to certain problems. And as a second helping hand, if you write for a dynamic platform that allow you to interact with others, you can also get some advice and feedback.

Releasing stress

Another benefit is related to a one point I expressed above. It's very important for every teacher to feel good inside. I mean, to be relaxed and be able not to bring any problems to school. But since teachers are dealing with many students who have different needs, they cannot help absorb part of their problems.

And sadly, teachers keep it inside. The have to swallow hard, so to speak. And when this extends, and the angst can be unbearable. And before they can explode, they need something where they can get it all out and put it into perspective.

That's the reason why some people in many fields find writing therapeutic. It makes you put into words all the things you deal everyday, and you share with people who can sympathize with you because they could have gone through the same.

Anyone can do it

Many teachers refrain themselves from writing because they might think that the don't have the talent. But we are not writing for competition here. We are writing to express our opinions and feeling, which is in fact the major reason for most of the great writers ever existed.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for instance, once confessed that he never learn the proper use of commas and some punctuation marks. And his books are been read and praised by millions.

So, we all can do it... not at that level precisely. And if we want to be excel at it. We can just practice... and how?

Just by writing more.

Thus, grab a pen or laptop, and start writing.
