Learn about the sun: includes science experiments

In the sky there are thousands of stars that we can easily see on clear nights and there are millions more that can only be seen through a telescope. The Sun is also a star, the closest to our planet Earth. That is why we see it bigger and brighter than any other celestial body.

Compared to the other stars however, the sun is medium in size, neither very large nor very bright. But its importance is enormous for all living beings. The sun is the source of life; it provides us with heat, light and energy.

Interesting facts about the sun:
• its size is 1,300,000 times greater than that of Earth;
• its weight is 330,000 times greater than that of our planet and;
• its light takes eight minutes to travel the 150,000,000 kilometres that separate it from us.

The age of a star is determined by the amount of hydrogen and helium it contains. New stars, like our Sun, have large amounts of hydrogen.

Will the sun ever disappear or burn out?

Probably yes, but scientists estimate that this will only happen in about 50 billion years. Meanwhile, enjoy the warm rays and the wonderful spectacle of light and colour that we take for granted.

Did you know ..

The sun's rays heat the soil of the land and the water of the seas and oceans.

Sun and science, experiment one: which warms up faster, land or water?

1.Fill one container with dry soil and another with water. Put them in the fridge until they cool well. Then remove them from the fridge and put them in the in direct sunlight for two hours. After the two hours, touch them and you will notice that the earth is hotter than the water.

Sun and science, experiment two: how do sun rays heat up the earth?

2.For this experiment you will only need a sheet of paper and a magnifying glass.
Place the paper on the floor, in a place where the sun is shining directly. With the magnifying glass at a certain distance, make the rays of the Sun focus on a certain point of the paper. Pay close attention because after a while, the paper will start to smoke and burn.
