I would like to share with you an organization which I admire the most, with regard to the exercise of a leader selection process. OSIS, which stands for Organisasi Siswa Intra Sekolah or Intra-School students Organization.

Organisasi Siswa Intra Sekolah (OSIS)

The OSIS is an organization whose board members, as well as regular members, are exclusively students. This organization is officially registered and fostered by the school themselves. Its main purpose is to gather students in conveying different aspirations to the school. An organization which is also authorized by different schools to develop the students’ potential in various fields.

The stewardship period in OSIS is generally one year old. This means that every year, there will be a selection process of its board members. As an organization that aims to build the school better, OSIS is expected to keep the school’s reputation intact. How the school is being perceived is heavily influenced by the existence of the organization.

In its journey, the creativity of the OSIS management is highly sought after. Something that is useful when the schools have not been able to demonstrate better quality. Thus, the synergy between the schools with OSIS is necessary. It is expected that OSIS will continue to promote the school as a proper place to develop the students’ potentials.

Submission of vision and mission

There are many schools that lists their OSIS as part of their advantages when promoting themselves. OSIS is able to mobilize the citizens of the school to express their potentials and their worth to be exhibited. No wonder that some schools with OSIS are able to hold various events such as the display of art, science, religious and many others. It is not rare to see for OSIS to attract donors to fund their different activities. These types of creativity should be greatly improved.

As an organization that is fostered directly by the school, OSIS must be able to demonstrate its identity as a student organization. The organizational development process must show the intellectuals that the students are intellectual candidates. Before entering the bigger community, OSIS is expected to be an appropriate place for learning how to organize. Not only that, OSIS becomes the place for students to learn other things, such as management, politics, strategy and many more.

Educating Democracy

As one of the periodization organizations, OSIS can be used as a model for a leader selection process. In this regard, many educational values can be taken from OSIS. Related to the selection process of the OSIS chairman, students will learn to develop democratic education from this activity. Students will be able to showcase a good democratic culture in a democracy event in Indonesia, as well as other countries. In addition, students are also able to cultivate a culture of character that includes respect, honesty, as well as other good values. Learning democracy in the OSIS election process, it is easy to demonstrate to the public how to democratize the good.

One of the schools that has OSIS, SMAN 7 Lhokseumawe, held a selection process of an OSIS chairman last Monday, January 22, 2018. Right after the chairman’s election, he was followed by three candidate pairs who’s tasked to convey the mission and vision in front of the school community which includes teachers. Uniquely, the chairman election process in this school involves teachers, as well as staff, along with the students, as voters. The election committee brought the polls to the voters who, in turn, choose the candidate they want to head the OSIS. Democracy, indeed, is really good.
