March Equinox on March 20
The equinox is being celebrated around the world. It is usually indicates the beginning of spring in south hemisphere and autumn in northern hemisphere.
WHAT IS AN EQUINOX?
It is when the equator is closest to the sun. The word Equinox is from the Latin word equal night. Theoretically speaking, all points in the Earth’s surface experience equal number of hours in day (12 hours) and night (12 hours).
During equinox, both the northern and southern hemisphere have equal number of hours of day and night.
The earth tilts at 23.5°. With this, half of the year, the northern hemisphere is somewhat facing away from the sun causes it have shorter days. Also, the other half, the southern hemisphere somewhat facing the towards the sun causes it have longer days.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF EQUINOX AND SOLSTICE?
Equinox is the Equator is closest to the sun while the Solstice is when the equator is at the greatest distance from the sun.
TRIVIA:
It is called the Summer Solstice because either of northern and southern hemisphere is closest to the sun, Not the equator.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MARCH EQUINOX
- It is the VERNAL (spring) equinox in Northern Hemisphere and the AUTUMNAL (fall) equinox in the Southern Hemisphere.
- *It is the First Equinox of the Year at around March 20 followed in September. *
- *Equal day and night in every point in the Earth’s surface. *
- *There are only two days of equinox in every year. *
The equinox occurs twice a year, at the beginning of spring around March 21 and beginning of fall at around September 23.
** THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SEPTEMBER EQUINOX **
- *It is the Second Equinox of the Year at around September 22. *
- *It is usually the end of the Summer and the beginning of Spring. *
- *It has the greater chances to see the Aurora Borealis in the Northern Hemisphere latitudes. *
