What is a Pronoun?

Source

In simple words, a pronoun is a word used instead of a noun.

The seven pronouns

There are mainly seven pronouns,

  • I
  • We
  • You
  • They
  • He
  • She
  • It

Pronouns have Subjective, Objective, Reflexive and Possessive forms

Subjective pronouns

Source

If a pronoun comes as the Subject of a sentence, we have to use the subjective form of the Pronouns.

  • I
  • We
  • You
  • They
  • He
  • She
  • It

eg:  I went to school

       We go to the beach

       You study hard

       They are so kind

       He is angry

       She is cute

       It is on the table

Objective pronouns

Source

When we have to use a pronoun as the object of a sentence, we have to use the Objective form of the pronouns.

  • I - me
  • we- us
  • you - you
  • they - them
  • he - him
  • she - her
  • it - it

eg :Ravi told me.

      Kasun blamed us

      He gave you

      She taught them.

      Mr.Nimal punished him.

      He told her.

      He washed it.

Reflexive pronouns

Source

Reflexive pronouns are normally used when the object of a sentence is the same as the subject.

  • I       - myself
  • We  - ourselves
  • You - yourself
  • They- themselves
  • He   - himself
  • She  - herself
  • It      - itself

eg: I did it myself.

      We did it ourselves.

      You did it yourself

      They did it themselves

      He did it himself

      She did it herself

      It did it itself

Possessive pronouns

Source

Possessive pronouns are used to demonstrate ownership. There are two forms of Possessive nouns.

  • I          - my/mine
  • We     - our/ours
  • You    - your/yours
  • They  - their/theirs
  • He      - his/his
  • She     - her/hers
  • It         - its/its

eg: This is my house / This house is mine.

This is our house / This house is ours.

This is your house/ This house is yours.

This is their house / This house is theirs.

        This is his house

This is her house / This house is hers.

        This is its house

We use the first form of the possessive pronoun in the middle of the sentence and the second form at the  end of the sentence.
