Identifying star patterns #3 (Let's learn series #5 : Astronomy)

The Zodiac
Twelve constellations have been named as the Zodiac.
- Aries
- Taurus
- Gemini
- Cancer
- Leo
- Virgo
- Libra
- Scorpius
- Saggitarius
- Capricorn
- Aquarius
- Pisces
The 12 signs of the Zodiac are indicated in 12 stamps in Sri Lanka.
Since a sphere has 360° and there are 12 constellations, the space in the sky for each constellation will be 30°.
When the sun is between a particular constellation and the earth, it is said that the sun is in that constellation.
If you observe the night sky on a clear day, you will see six constellations. For each two hours, one constellation will rise up in the Eastern horizon while another will set down in the Western horizon.
Uses of constellations
- Used to find the direction.
eg: The constellation Ursa minor indicates the Northern direction while Southern cross indicates the South direction.
- The position of a particular planet can be stated.
eg: By saying that “planet Mars is in the scorpius constellation” means, that the planet can be seen in the area of the sky, which belongs to the scorpius constellation.
- The appearance of a comet can be predicted.
eg: In 1986 Halleys comet was seen in the area between scorpius and Sagittarius constellations.
- Constellations help us to identify the direction in which you should observe to see the meteorite rains.
eg: Every year the meteorite shower ‘Leonids’ can be seen in the background of Leo constellation on the 15th November.
The horoscope is predicted according to the constellation which arises in the Eastern direction at the time of birth.

Well, when the sun is between a particular constellation and the earth, it is said that the sun is in that constellation. Like when you were born, the sun has been between the Libra constellation and the earth.
The answer to your question is,
you know that the earth rotates 360° everyday. So for each constellation to rise up, the earth has to rotate 30°. That means, when the earth rotates 30°, a constellation will rise up in the Eastern horizon.
360°/12 = 30°

But why do think that horoscope presents the characteristics of people and the future ?
Like, "Today is a lucky day for all Libras. They will spend happy times with their friends."
Something like this.

Yeah. That's a big question for me too. As I've heard, it's according to astrology. But I don't believe in them. It's no use knowing the future. What happens is to be happened.
I don't even read or listen to them.
One time, it was said that scorpius's will have a fever. After reading it it echoed in my mind and then I got sick.
But there is something related with fortunetelling and astrology. I don't know about those things that much.

I think that the fortune telling is according to database of many people.
Let me make it simple with example of Libras.
Scientist examined many Libras.
They saw that the majority of people face fever on the first of Libra Constellation. For example, 50% gets sick, 20% spends happy time, 20% face bad time and other 10% face other kinds of thing.
That's why Horoscope says that Libra's are likely to get sick on the first day of constellation.
Probably something similar happened :D
Yeah. Fortune telling is such a stupid thing.
But there are some people who tell about the future with the use of gods.
Have you heard about John of God? It is said that patients come to him and a god whispers the sickness to him and the correct meds to give.
Like this, some people tells fortune with the help of god.
I don't know about it.
We can't prove that anything is 100% correct or 100% wrong.
People can't hear God whispering to him neither they can prove he is telling the truth.
Also neither they can prove he is lying.
I wonder if you are understanding what I am trying to say.
Yeah I understand. Those things are a mystery. It makes me go crazy just by thinking about it 😵
