AWARENESS in reducing household waste through recycling is still low among Malaysians, says Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp Malaysia). SWCorp deputy chief executive officer (technical) Dr Mohd Pauze Mohamad Taha said that the recycling rate in Malaysia last year is only 17.5% despite introducing the waste segregation programme. “This shows that there is still a large portion of solid waste being disposed in landfills and not deviated to recycle,” he says.

To increase awareness on recycling among Children with learning difficulties in Malaysia, SHARE team has prepared a drama based on the book entitled “How garbage gets from Trash cans to Landfills”. After reading this book, I found out recycling can be practiced in a natural and interesting way like a drama. I believe children will enjoy this show.

We had 2 weeks of practice and rehearsals. Our students in SHARE team did a good job acting out the drama while also handling the P.A. system. They were rather anxious as handling technical equipment was new to them. We roped in an apprentice to add more action into the show.

Script for Drama

1. Every day we throw away food and drink containers, bottles, plastic bags, papers and what-nots. Where do all these garbage go?

2. Garbage is also called waste. Wastes are anything that is no longer used. Everything from old food, bottles and shoes to broken toys can be wastes.

3. Garbage collectors haul wastes from homes and businesses to a landfill. Then workers at the landfill will pile up the wastes and bury them

4. People toss wastes into garbage cans and recycling bins. The wastes in recycling bins will be made into new things.

5. Wastes in recycling bins do not end up in a landfill. A recycling truck collects it and takes it to a recycling centre.

6. Workers sort plastics, papers and metals into different gigantic bundles. Cans into the yellow bin, plastics bottles into the red bin and papers into the blue bin.

7. At best centre, we can upcycle unwanted materials into creative products.

8. We can make beautiful pots from plastic bottles and tin cans. Wonderful, we have made a new product.

9. You can reduce waste. Buy only what you need. Use your own cloth bags at stores. Buy a water bottle to use over and over again.

10. Let's work together to recycle, reduce and reuse. Thank you so much for your time.

On actual day of Recycling Drama in Lake Garden in Kuala Lumpur, we setup the scene with different colours of bins with labels. Noticed from the picture, yellow bin is for can; red bin is for plastic, blue bin is for paper. Around 10.30am, the drama kicked off.

This drama was presented to around 30 students from BEST centre. After the drama, these students will take turn to practice throwing the recycled items in the right bins. We can see their smiley face that they really learn something from this recycling drama.
