Should I Reward Cheating?

It was a day of miracles. Lo and behold, all my students completed their work. Everyone passed up their work which was weird. You know what they say, when something is too good to be true, it normally is...
Upon further investigation, my suspicion was confirmed. Most of my students cheated by copying each other's work. It was an individual task of 30 questions. However, some of them worked together to complete their work. They shared the workload so they would not have to attempt all 30 questions. Instead, all they had to do was complete one, perhaps two questions each and share their answer with each other.
I was impressed yet disappointed at the same time. The task was given so I would get a better idea of each of their ability. If they collaborated, it becomes difficult to determine the extent of each student's understanding. However, they did have a lot on their plate and working together seemed to be the more sensible idea. Thus, there was a dilemma...
Encouraging Collaboration & Problem Solving Skills

I come from a strict Chinese school background whereby discipline and obedience is prized above all. The thing is, it is often difficult to focus on a skill like problem solving and obedience at the same time. Take the example above when the students banded together to solve a problem, that shows their ability to solve an issue. However, it can be rather difficult for them to solve the problem and obey at the same time. While they could work together to complete the homework, it is not as 'efficient' as copying each other's work.
Thus, some part of me wanted to congratulate them on a job well done. We all find some sort of shortcut or hack in solving our daily problems. We may look for bots to welcome someone in a discord group or collaborate with others to complete a large scale project. To do so effectively takes training and skill and the students displayed that. However...
A Disregard of Authority
If I were to congratulate them on cheating, I do wonder what message would I send them. Perhaps they may get the wrong idea that everything in life can be hacked. While that is true, it does diminish the need and value of hard work. Think about it, would you strive for something knowing that there is a shortcut to everything? I do wonder if I would be crippling them for life, indirectly sending them a message that they do not have to work hard.

Perhaps worse of all is that I may be telling them that it is alright to disregard authority. I don't hold any grudge against my students disobeying me, instead, I worry. I worry if they would continue doing this and that costs them something in the future. Like it or not, we learn from people in authority. It is through working in a company that we learn how to open our own. It is by listening to a teacher that we learn how to be a better learner. However, if the students disregard that authority, I fear it may cause them to lose out on learning opportunities that could benefit them in the long run.
Referring back to the example of students cheating on their task, if they were to complete the task on their own without cheating. Valuable lessons such as time management and stress management can be learnt. However, disregarding my authority and other teachers, mentors and experts' authority in the future will cost them even more as time goes by. This may even snowball to a lifetime of missed opportunities and lessons.
Can You Guess What I Did?
As I thought through all this, perhaps I am the only one faced with such a dilemma. For most, I am sure that the decision is easy and the students will be punished for cheating. Since I do encourage problem solving and collaboration in class, I wonder if punishing them would make me a hypocrite. That being said, what seems clear is that I have to choose.

Standing in front of the students, I addressed them and commended them for completing the task despite having a lot of tasks to do. However, I disciplined the class with extra tasks and written assignments. The issue for me is not merely about creativity or obedience but character. I lovingly informed the class that if they find cheating ok, and managed to somehow justify why cheating is good, perhaps they may do the same in the future. It could be a project, a job or even on your family. Thus, they need to know that it matters on how we achieve our goal and they should strive to reach it via the correct means even if it takes a longer time.
Intelligence and obedience are admirable traits, but having your heart in the right place means more, at least in my opinion. What are your thoughts on this? Do let me know in the comments below.
I think original works more than better than cheating sir, maybe we got best score on exam, but that's really bad.
we should entry the anwers of exam as long as we know about it, if we couldn't anwers it, so we know how long we understand about thats lesson.
maybe we should make a some creative ways to teach them, like out doors learning or playing fun with little game while in the class.
so kept spirit my friend :)
have a good day for you
That's right and I agree that original works are better. However, it is problem solving that the students managed to do. Thus the dilemma. Thanks for dropping by!
you're really a good person, and good teacher too,
have a good my dear friend
It is a dilemma! I commend you for noticing it, as it is implicit in all traditional education.
Unfortunately I cannot agree with most of the comments here, there are many short cuts in life, and cheating is often acceptable, although called by other names (collaboration!). The problem is, our educational system values skills that are no longer important (memorization).
I prefer to use open book, open note tests. I prefer to see who knows how to get to the answer than who can remember the answer. This may not be applicable in all subjects, and requires that the test is on a deeper understanding of the material, and not just the base facts and dates.
It is hard to be an educator in these times of revolutionary change. What are we educating them for? I think that is the key question. Our world desperately needs people that can get along and work together to solve problems, and has very little use for people with heads stuffed with facts.
Blessings to you!
Exactly! Why memorize when you have Google? One article stated that while memorization was essential, our brains have adapted to the current technology and times. Thus, more resources in the brain have shifted to creativity and problem solving instead of memorizing. I love open book tests and projects where the students get to apply what they have learnt instead of regurgitate what was learnt. Thanks for stopping by! Appreciate it.

it just seems like you need to find a teacher like you.
Hahaha.. what do you mean by that?
It depends as if cheat collectively with high team spirit and with no betrayal to the teammates shows that students are loyal to their code! However, of course, cheating should not be encouraged :P
I guess if you put it that way.. intent is very important and if they intended to cheat, well.. punishment for all!!
ya, kena all. That's team spirit lol.
When I was a junior high school student, I had a science teacher whose tests — after her brain was damaged in a car accident — always had only true-or-false questions, for which the correct answers were always True.
One of my classmates was a drug-addled bully who had injured a friend of mine. He noticed that I always got all my answers right, and threatened to beat me if I didn't let him copy my answers. He said he would put me in the hospital if I did not comply. I believed him, and let him copy my answers.
That whole school year, though he carefully copied my answers, he never noticed that I always answered T for True. He did notice that I never scored less than 100% on those tests.
Our teacher was too handicapped by brain damage to notice our cheating. She gave pretty good lectures, however, except for a few crazy moments when she told us things like, "God is hydrogen!"
By the time I graduated from high school, the bully who used to copy my answers had stopped beating people, gotten off drugs, and become a good man and solid citizen.
wow... bully aside.. I'm curious, why is the teacher allowed to teach despite her disability?
Well, this was decades ago, she no longer teaches. When she did teach, her disability was not very evident to other adults, because she neither tested nor lectured them. Besides, taking her job away for a disability would have been illegal without a series of administrative hearings that would have been costly for the school system.
I commend you for teaching them there are no short cuts.
Life is full of short cuts, I take one home everyday.
Cheating should be discouraged at all cost
Team work and google searches, which are cheating in primary school, are important life skills after graduation.
Well they were creative and worked as a team I guess but I like the way you handled it
Thanks.. I suppose in some ways... I was proud but cheating is still cheating, so something still has to be done..
I agree totally and you handled it well
Having in mind that the purpose of the task is to check each ones knowlege and skills I find obvious the decision you have to make, because you are not able to correnctly rate theirs skills. However, in order to develop theirs teamwork skills you can assign them group tasks.
Thanks for that, I think what bugs me is that in the midst of fulfilling the objectives to my lesson, I wonder sometimes if certain skills like this have gone unnoticed.
