Numbered Head Together (NHT) : A Cooperative Learning Model

Today’s post of my article is about a cooperative a learning model called Numbered Head Together (NHT). This is one of cooperative learning model where teacher apply this learning model in the classroom to make students learn cooperatively with their friends. Basically, this model first introduce by Spancer Kegan in 1993. His purose of applying this model is to involved many students in learning and then they can work together to check their understanding of what they have learned with their peers.

Numbered Head Together (NHT) is a learning model design for students to work in groups to gain a mutual understanding of a topic taught through the questions asked by the teacher to them. In working in groups, each student is assigned a number as their identity. The student whose number is mentioned must answer the question asked by the teacher.

To apply this learning model in your class, there are several steps you should take into account:

Stage 1: Numbering, the teacher divides students into several groups consisting 5 students. The student numbers in each group are 1 to 5.

Stage 2: Questioning, the teacher asks a question to each group.

Stage 3: Thinking, the students cooperatively discuss about the answer in their group.

Stage 4: Answering, the student whose number called by the teacher is responsible to answer the question.

How to apply Numbered Head Together in your classroom?

The following are the steps of applying this learning model in your classroom. However, this model can be applied any lesson you teach. Or, you can adapt this model based on your needs.

  1. After begin the lesson, the teacher devides students into several groups consisting of 5 students.
  2. Each students in the groups is given the number as their identity such as 1,2,3,4,5. To make it more interesting, their number can be put in their head or stuck on their cap.
  3. Each group is given a task or a question by the teacher. Then, students cooperatively discuss with thier friend to complete the task or to answer the question given by the teacher. The teacher control students activity to ensure that all students involved in the discussion.
  4. The teacher mention a number of student in each group to explain the answer of the question. after a students gives answer, the teacher may call another number from other group to give a comment or suggestion.
    5.At the end, the teacher draws a conclusion and provides an evaluation of individual and group performance.

What are the advantages of this model?

Several advantages can be gained from applying this learning model. First, students collaborative skill is increasing because students work together with their friend in their groups. Second, it can increases students responsibility because each of them have to answer the question when the number is called. The third, students can better respect the opinions of others because they work together in groups.

This is a method worth trying as it makes all members of the group have to participate and know their tasks or questions all around. It makes them cannot depend on just one member to do it all. Very creative approach, @affiedalfayed :)
