According to the central mystery of this general Christian belief, there is only one God in three persons: though different from each other in the original relationship (as stated in the Lateran Council IV, "is the begotten Son, the begotten Son, and the exhaled Spirit" ) and relationships with each other, but all three are manifested in one another, equal, equal, and consubstantial, and each one is God, wholly and wholly. Hence the whole work of creation and mercy is seen as a single joint operation on all three divine persons, with the specificity of each person, so that everything comes "from the Father", "through the Son", and "in the Holy Spirit".
The Fathers of the Church regarded the elements of the Old Testament as the appearance of the three men to Abraham in Genesis, chapter 18, as a sign of the Trinity, yet they regard the New Testament as a foundation for developing the concept of the Trinity. The most influential New Testament text that is considered to imply the doctrine of the Trinity is Matthew 28:19, which mandates to baptize "in the name of the Father and [the Son] and of the Holy Ghost." Reflection, preaching, and dialogue, leads to the formulation of perceived doctrine in accordance with the data contained in the Bible. The simplest overview of this doctrine was formulated in the fourth century, largely concerned with the rejection of what is seen as inconsistent with Christian beliefs. Further elaboration continued in the following centuries.

Scripture does not contain the word Trinity, nor explicitly formulates the doctrine of the Trinity. By contrast, according to Christian theology, the Scriptures "bear witness" of the activity of a personal God that can only be understood in terms of Trinitarianism. This new doctrine had its definitive form at the end of the 4th century. During the transitional period, various tentative solutions were proposed, either more or less satisfactory. Trinitarianism is contrasted with nontrinitarist positions which include Binitarianism (one substance in two persons), Unitarianism (one substance in one person, can be analogous to the Jewish interpretation of Shema and Muslim belief in Tawhid), Pentecostalism or Capitalism (a substance manifested in three separate aspects.
