So it is the LACK of theses insects that signals polluted water? I can think of one lovely and clean waterfall near my house in Thailand that had HUNDREDS of these in the tiny, warm rock pools off to the sides of the falls where the insects gather and breed.

yes you are right. So in your area the water is good. Actually many bio indicator to know the clean water such Planaria worm. they very sensitive to the polutan.
