What music would you choose on a crashing plane?

I work alot in the UK and regularly fly over for the day and fly back that evening. The flight isn't too long, from Cork it is around 45 minutes. I am around 45 minutes from airport so not too bad. Dublin is 2 hours so I try to fly out of there. The trouble with Cork is that it is an extremely hard airport to land into. My sister is going out with a pilot and he said other than Madeira that has it's runway on a pier, it is probably the hardest airport to fly into in the world. IN THE WORLD??? Hang on a minute now, go back a bit. Yep that's what he said. The tight runway, the mist and fog, the close proximity of the cliffs to the runway are all a risk. And then there is the high winds coming in off the atlantic ocean. All very unsettling.

Its location is often hampered by mist and fog.

Now I used to hate flying. Then I sat beside a pilot one day coming home from Ibiza. He saw that I was nervous( stared at the same page of the newspaper for an hour). He told me he was a pilot and he talked me through all the motions, creeks, noises and banks that the plane performed. Problem solved. I was cured. I even went home and purchased a joystick and a flight simulator for the pc. I started working in Germany and ended up flying home every second weekend so I got used to it. Now flying is just a chore to me but I don't mind it. The way I look at it, my life is in the pilots hands and hopefully you won't crash. There's more chance of a [INSERT SOMETHING MAD HAPPENING] than to be in a plane crash. Yes I meant to leave that in. Just make one up. A donkey falling from a rooftop or something.

So I'm on the buddy holly plane on the way back to Cork. 9pm. Long day. I travel light, a laptop and my phone. Get the headphones out and go on Spotify. Pilot came on the loudspeaker. Same old nice calm pilotly lingo.I love hearing the sound of the pilot. It relaxes me. Ground temperature blah blah, miles per hour, cruising altitude will be 25,000 feet , taxi will be 5 minutes, flight clearence has just arrived ........ 80 mph winds in Cork, bumpy landing. He was doing so well. Sooooo so well until the 80 mph. 80 mph??? A guy beside me looked at me and raised his eyebrows and threw his eyes to heaven "Twill be a bumpy one". "Twill" I said. Its not as if the pilot can choose a different runway in Cork like most airports. There is only one!!!

So we set out. All was fine taking off. Angela was the air hostess looking after us. I got to know Angela from my commutes. Very nice lady. Id say she was a supermodel in her 20's and could still turn heads now 30 years later. She sorted me out with a white wine ,my new airline drink of choice. The flight started getting bumpy so Angela had to go back and sit down in her seat. I was up the front so Angela was directly opposite me facing me. We were making small talk when the plane was hit by an enormous gust which made everyone leave out a gasp. And when that happened there is always another gust close by and it happened again. Luggage fell out of the overhead and by then we were commited. We were coming into land.
An Irish billionaire called JP McManus once said the difference between involved and commited was answered at the brekfast table looking at a bacon and egg. The chicken was involved but the pig was commited. Anyway this pilot was commited. He went for it. We were about 50 feet from the ground. Another gust. Knocked us sideways. The engines roared. Abort abort.
This was the first time this ever happened to me. It wasn't so bad actually. We were so close but yet so far. There was alot of chatter on the plane. A few worried faces. I looked at the Angela. Angela was grand. Maybe it was the dermal fillers but she looked calm. The way back up was horrendous. I mean the worst I've ever encounter. Plane was thrown around the place and we had to try again. The pilot circled. We were gonna give it another try. Angela looked at me and said it's normal here. He always gets down a second time. We tried again. It was too windy. Second abort. Engines roared. Up again. Now this time there was no chatter. We were in trouble here. The whole plane went silent. Even Angela was cracking a frown of worry of some description. The planes silence got me very worried so I went straight for Spotify. I need a song. I need a song. I scrolled through my playlists...... Bob Dylan ..No..... Jimi Hendrix ...No.. the beatles..... maybe but they have too many good songs. It would be like Netflix, scrolling the songs until we crash. So I chose Bon Iver. I could only ever manage Bon Iver in small doses but this seemed like a fitting time to listen to one. Now that doesn't say much about the band but it really helped me through the second abort takeoff. I turned on their song Holocene One of my favourites from them. Here it is.

Flight protocol states that you can only abort twice and then go to a different airport so we ended up flying up the country to Shannon which was no walk in the park either. We safely landed . When the lights came on on the plane there were people crying, kids distraught and it was a shocking sight. The pilot has to exit the plane like the rest of us in these models. The pilot got a standing ovation. He was only a kid. Sweat was pouring off him. Angela gave him a big smacker on the lips ."Well done Gerry", "Well done". I was never more happy to be on the ground. The calvary were dispatched to get me home.
A couple of weeks later a director of the company I work for called me . He was on a flight that actually crashed in Cork. 6 out of 12 people died on that flight. Same story , strong winds and foggy. I was very lucky. He never flew again. Here’s his plane or the remains of it.

So my question to you is in the title. What song would you go for if you were in difficulty and thought you were soon going to be brown bread? Will make for some interesting comments.

Hi @blanchy. I missed this one lol. Yeah I have had a few rough ones as well and don't think a song came to mind. If I was close to the cockpit maybe I would pop in there and have a go if the pilot was looking like crashing anyway. Never liked relying on others for my own personal safety and that is probably why I always drive myself and don't take lifts. Every time I get a lift something always happens.

Can you fly @cryptoandcoffee? 🤔🤔

No lol but I am a quick learner.

What is your discord user name I am trying to get you in somewhere.

Blanchy 0138. Get me in somewhere? Sounds very eyes wide shut! 😂😂

Trust me it will help you grow. I am in there already. Not as exiting as eyes wide shut lol.

Oh Jesus ! We re in trouble so ! 😂😂😂

Video Tape by Radiohead...but most likely I won't even think of it as my lips would be busy praying hahah

ahh finally someone picked my favourite band @thekitchenfairy. I love Thom's haunty songs like that and pyramid song but it is a suitable song also. Thanks for the comment!

Haha good one. Hope you would do the strut down the aisle of the plane with the air guitar

Could probably do it from the ceiling if the plane is going down lol

A former colleague of mine was on a plane that had to land with no front landing (wouldn’t deploy). I’ve personally been in some major gusts but nothing like that. Song? Hmmm? Perhaps Bette Midlers “ Wind Beneath My Wings”.

I’m amazed of how many famous songs would be suitable in a plane crash 😂😂 no front landing 😱😱😱. Must of came down doing a wheelie .

That’s exactly what they did and then plopped the front end down. I can’t even imagine how intense that must have been. No one was hurt either.

If I had to Irish on the song I’d probably go with Jump Around by House of Pain 😎

@blanchy in a crashing plane I always love listening my favourite song ones again
Despacito
Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito
Deja que te diga cosas al oído
Para que te acuerdes si no estás conmigo♥️

Why not a bit of summer music while you are going down with the ship

lol, well considering I would probably crap all over myself. (not really but it sounds funny.)
I would go for this classy song....

It's a beauty of a song and worth a listen. Especially in those white pants the dude is wearing. LOL
