PHILIPPINE PANGOLIN
Scaly Anteater
Manis Culionensis
Acrylic on Paper
8×12 inch

I was fascinated by this one of kind species of fauna which can found in Palawan Philippines. These creature is a unique kind of an ant eater because of its scales which serves as a protection from its predators. When threatened it will just roll itself tightly that it will look like scaly ball. These mammal is nocturnal which dwells on the forest as its food is mainly ants and termites. It will break open dead logs and earth mounds using its sharp claws in order to eat ants and termites it will just stick out its long sticky tongue and suck the termites that stick to it. Sad to see news about the rampant poaching of these beautiful creature. These species are endangered, according to report, its number is rapidly dwendling due to habitat loss which is caused by illegal logging and illegal poaching also contributes to the drop of their population. It is also hunted for its meat, skin and scales. Let us help protect these creatures because the these species are already endangered.

Here's the steps and process of my painting which I did today. I painted this beautiful creature to create an awareness because these are already endangered. I painted this using acrylic as my medium. I gather photo from the internet and choose the best picture ti paint. The scales is challenging and it took me a lot of time doing the details of it.

The final painting.

Sketching the subject using pencil.

Then painting the background first.

After painting the dead tree and the pangolin figure which I used different hues of gray creating a tonal value light to dark as base to its form. Then after I proceed on the detailing of the scales, detail after detail.

Until I filled all the outline and details of the subject.

And at last the final touches, the highlights a mix of white and yellow for this will give depth to the painting, this determines the source of light. And add the cast shadow using a mix of blue and red and white.

Thank Gi bason maukal kaloy an...

Very nice! I've only discovered the existence of pangolins quite recently and didn't know we had them as well! Beautifully painted. Followed!

Thanks maam same as your drawings too they are beautiful... I learned about the pangolin during my high school day maybe 23 years ago, and now they are already endangered sad to know the reality. :)

Yes, I think I read about that, too. Sobrang nakakalungkot nga eh. Maybe that's why they are so little known. I believe they are being illegally hunted/traded in other places in southeast Asia too.

The great thing though is your post will spread awareness about these unique creatures. I will keep an eye out for more of your art! :)
