You've made it onto Steemit Chat, now BREATHE!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Hey guys, so I published my first post on Steemit 2 months ago.

All though I stumbled onto this platform during a hectic period of my life, which prevented me from posting more, I was waiting for the storm to pass and now things are getting back to normal for me on a day to day basis. Although I was somewhat inactive and not posting as much as I would have wanted to. Steemit and its potential have been on my mind ever since.

As I was trying to get inspired and get this blog thing going, I joined the chatroom on a more regular basis in the past few days, so I can get inspired and meet other likeminded people and see their work. And also to be silly and annoy @clevercreator 😜. I had missed her.

I have made a few contacts and I am happy with the friends I have been making so far. After reflecting about my last stint in the chat room I realize that when you have not been hanging out in chatroom for years, it takes some adapting. When you are used to connecting with people on a one to one basis, and are used to communication through human contact (as opposed to text messages or emails) it gets you to thinking. The chat is a big party, but it’s not always party time, or the kinda party where you want be the center of attention for negative reasons. In person you can make a sarcastic joke and pat the person on the back with a smile. In writing, not so much. So here are some tips, and remember most of all to have fun!

  1. Communicate with others: that means show interest in the people with whom you connect and see on a regular basis, we are all human and here for the same reason! Try to find out what everyone's story and MO is.
  2. Create bonds and concentrate on the positive, because everything else can divide, especially conversations about flag wars, politics, etc.
  3. Read read read. Sometimes some conversations are best to avoid or jump into, all though they might be satisfying for your ego, are just not worth your time.
  4. All though I suggested you read read read , sometimes it’s best not to read into some comments or replies to deeply. Google the word projection!
  5. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!
  6. Realize that everyone has their own personality, and when someone doesn’t know you too well they might take offense at what you might have intended to be a joke. There isn’t always an opportunity to explain so don’t burn people off! Ease them in slowly into your style of humour.
  7. Social skills! Read all of the above and try to take the chat light heartedly!
  8. Try to help, no matter how little knowledge you have about Steemit, you can surely help a new user who knows less than you.
  9. You will not get along or agree with everyone and that's fine. Move on to others users who will appreciate you.
  10. YUNK! I will let you find out on your own what this means!

I will not mention that basic social skills and politeness are required in any community, that goes without saying! And spamming a link is not a polite way of saying hello to the human on the other side of the keyboard!

A special shout out to the personalities (yes, personalities!) who have struck me so far in the chat room, and welcomed me into this community unknowingly : @crypto2day @clevercreator @kryptik and more recently @saywha @apsu (assu) @illuminaughti @flashbid @satchmo @krazykrista and @technosgirl I heart you all. You keep me inspired and looking forward to see you in the chat room. If I forgot anyone else, you are loved!

And a special thanks to @acidyo who showed me the ropes and who keeps helping others get started and flourish on the platform and protects our space from the trolls and fake profiles.

Tips from an imperfect human being gone clean, holla!

Heyyyyyy!

I'm happy to have been a part of your SteemIt adventure and making you feel welcome in the community.

I could definitely say the same about you.

You were one of the first people I felt like I connected with in chat and I have to say are definerely one of the people that kept me coming back!

Happy for SteemIt that we were able to connect...

So much #yunk you have.

Likewise bud! Thanks and #yunk you!

Anything I can do to #yunk and you know I'm there.

I warmed up to the chat...but i cant say i found it welcoming or warm at start (compared to other chats i ran into in my life)....like all things.....chat is a living, breathing monster...the groups are tight and it takes a lot of greese to slip in. Language can be an issue too....with a blog you can take your sweet time and let the app fix you typos.

I can relate to point 6. very much. Sometimes i actually pull myself back knowing my sense of humor is an acquired taste. :)

Lol i think that can be the problem with some of us. Some people hold back and others (like myself) dont because its kind of the one place we can just be unfiltered and its okay (meaning there are no big consequences to what you say)

Hey @atopy you don't want to hold yourself back to to much tho, I think if I had to really censor myself 100% I might as well spend my time on Facebook. I think it's all about balance, still a work in progress. Thanks for the comment!

Twinsieeeee.
