Thanks for the very comprehensive info! I've been using the .chat to share posts, but find it's a little bit "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" when I only want to up and resteem content that I personally think has value (like this post!).

I think building links with the community is very important. My approach has been to leave lots of comments on other people's posts and always reply to comments left on my posts. The danger of networking on such a big platform is that people spread themselves too thin. I'm happy to have met one or two very quality people who's posts I will up and share in the future.
