Who are the Whales and why you shouldn't care about them
Do you wonder why different posts have crazy spread in value while being voted equally?
So was I until I found out a thing.
Being noob on a Steemit I started wandering soon "Who are the Whales" and "Why there's so much hype about them?" After a ton of << TOTALLY HILARIOUS JOKES POSTING PICTURES OF ACTUAL WHALES >> I meet my interest.
So, in short they are those who influence the most on Steemit. There are few key characteristics that makes Whales who they are, but you can sum that into "overall popularity" + "activity". A single vote of a Whale can make you over $100. So do I sound crazy speaking you shouldn't care about them? Maybe, but here's what.
There's only one king who can serve you, and his name is content. That easy. While Steemit is different and innovative in many ways, it is still a real life. And people care about real things what matters to them. Even if one happened to be a whale.
Whale once is not always a whale. The life is tough, and the things are changing fast. Who knows who is gonna be the next whale and who's gonna swim away doing gardening (and not being posting his garden things on Steemit)? If you try to catch a whale, you fail. They are all people, and you hardly can predict their behaviour based on some random data.
Do what you love. First there were parents to told you what you need to be, then society... You've survived? Nice. So you probably don't want some kind of person you never met told you what to do. If you posting about the things you love to do it won't be a big deal to go with a few bucks. Instead you'll feel yourself miserable carrying water to sea without even getting pay for that.
Steemit is evolving. It's pretty much in a beta, and who knows what's coming next? The whole
Is it unfair, the whole whales situation?
I don't think so. Most of them posting something people really care, and get their just reward for that. And some of them combined that value with the benefits of early adopters, just like early bitcoin adopters done. In the very start of a Steemit they were brave and enthusiastic enough to be the first who explore its opportunities, and they got their reward.
I'd like to emphasise that whalesonly care because of their RELATIVE power. If the top 100 whales stopped voting, then it will be the subsequent dolphines that become whales and can upvote with several 100$ ..
Thanks, That's a really valuable info
Great post and I loved reading it! I agree with you fully even though I do have my weak moments! :D
Thanks for reading !
Yeap, all of us have, we just have to keep trying. And, like Homer says, “Trying is the first step towards failure” :D
Haha, yes we can't fail if we don't try at all! Have a great steeming day!
